The Colonies RV & Travel Park at Fort Monroe

Overview

The Colonies RV & Travel Park offers a truly distinctive camping experience tucked inside the historic Fort Monroe National Monument. Located at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula in Hampton, this park provides travelers with a rare opportunity to stay on the grounds of a deactivated military installation. The atmosphere is peaceful, combining scenic waterfront views with centuries of American history right outside your rig door.

Location & Surroundings

Positioned at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, the park is surrounded by water and lush greenery. The site is part of the larger Old Point Comfort area, where travelers can explore the massive stone walls of the fortress and enjoy the coastal breeze. It is a quiet pocket of land that feels miles away from the city, yet remains conveniently close to the urban amenities of Hampton and Newport News.

Amenities & Park Features

This intimate park features sites equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Each spot provides a level surface for easy setup. The park offers essential conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay, including:

  • Individual paved pads with picnic tables and charcoal grills.
  • Onsite laundry facilities and clean bathhouses.
  • Pet-friendly walking areas and easy beach access.

The simple layout and limited number of sites ensure a quiet stay without the noise and crowd of larger commercial resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Guests are just a short walk from the Casemate Museum, where they can learn about the fort’s significant role in the Civil War. For those who enjoy the outdoors, Outlook Beach provides a perfect spot for swimming or watching ships pass in the bay. Walking or biking the miles of paved trails along the seawall is a popular activity, offering stunning vistas of the Hampton Roads harbor and local wildlife.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for history enthusiasts and travelers seeking a serene, slow-paced environment. It appeals to couples and solo travelers who value unique surroundings over modern resort-style amenities like water parks or organized activities. If you prefer a coastal getaway with deep historical roots and easy access to the water, this park is the perfect home base for exploring coastal Virginia.

Very nice RV park with full hook ups and a beautiful view of the waterfront. Has all you need. Small and quiet.

This park is wonderful. It was easy to arrange dates to stay and the staff was friendly. Park is clean and lots to do and see just at the Fort.

Arrived on Thursday evening for the 4th of July weekend and the staff is absolutely wonderful. The shower that's made available for those that are camping in tents, like us, is clean and cool there's a washer and dryer available for use also. And they had this cute little ice cream social today. The store has everything you may need that you may have forgotten.

Getting here is a little hectic. Tons of traffic. Once you’re on the island things get a bit nicer. The RV park is small and quaint. A little rundown. The camping store has a good selection. Nice employees. One washer and dryer. One bathroom stall for each, men and women. They’re big and have a shower in them. Usually clean. FHU in the circle/the sites with state names. W&E on the other side. You pull in and check in and then have to go out of the circle and over to your side. People in the circle tend to park in the way and you might have to go on the grass to go around. You get a day pass to go to the beach club. There’s a brewery on the island but it’s not the best. They do have lots of events though. The Fort is amazing. I’m not sure I’d recommend people staying here though lol. Depends what you’re looking for. If you want a little chaos and you don’t mind a little run down, you can make it work!

We had a great experience! Stayed through the winter Dec-May, and it was freezing 🥶🥶 (you're surrounded by water) but absolutely beautiful!! Cindi and Derek, the hosts were very nice and we met some great people 😊. #RVlife

I didn't stay, but it looks like a nice, quiet place to land an RV for a stay.

Rv and tent sites. Sewage and water hookup at most rv sites. Plan ahead and reserve your site as the campground is popular. Historic fort Monroe. There's a campstore. Also there's a brewery within walking distance with and assortment of local rotating food trucks.

We have water on both sides. The scenery is quiet, serene, and beautiful! We have great cell service! Cute little store! Nice, friendly staff. Would definitely stay here again!

Another seen from my bike ride I see these folks every other day... a different group of travelers turn over is pretty consistent. Slice out.

Drove through to check out. Needs some work for visual appeal. Full hookup sites appear ok. Water/electric are tucked past the store out of view. Nothing about the sites are appealing. They are lined up next to each other. The camp store was amazing inside. Very clean and organized, visually pleasing. This campground offers a great location but there is no beach access to speak of.
