The Savannas Rec Area

Overview

The Savannas Recreation Area offers a unique escape into a sprawling 550-acre wilderness preserve. Managed by St. Lucie County, this park provides a tranquil setting that feels far removed from the typical high-rise developments of coastal Florida. Visitors are treated to a diverse ecosystem consisting of pristine freshwater marshes and pine flatwoods. This park serves as a hidden gem for travelers seeking to experience the authentic, rugged beauty of the Treasure Coast while enjoying comfortable camping facilities.

Location & Surroundings

Located just minutes from the heart of Fort Pierce, the park sits in a prime location that balances convenience with seclusion. The landscape is defined by the Savannas marsh system, a unique remnant of the original Florida Everglades. The park’s position allows for easy access to the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, while the immediate surroundings are filled with native cabbage palms and ancient oaks. Travelers often remark on the stunning sunrises over the wetlands.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is designed to accommodate various setups, offering sites with full hookups including water, sewer, and electricity. The park features a trading post where guests can rent canoes or bicycles to explore the terrain. Additional amenities include:

  • Clean, climate-controlled restrooms and hot showers.
  • A central laundry facility for long-term stays.
  • A hand-launch boat ramp for marsh access.

The multi-use trails are well-marked, providing miles of opportunities for hiking or mountain biking through the scenic Florida backcountry.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park is a sanctuary, the surrounding area is rich with activities. The National Navy SEAL Museum is a short drive away, offering a deep dive into military history. For those who enjoy the beach, the nearby Fort Pierce Inlet State Park provides beautiful sandy shores and excellent surfing conditions. On Saturdays, the Fort Pierce Farmers Market is a must-visit for local produce and crafts, consistently ranked as one of the best open-air markets in the state.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal choice for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers who hope to observe sandhill cranes, herons, and wood storks in their natural habitat. It is specifically suited for RVers who value a peaceful, natural setting over the high-energy environment of a traditional luxury resort. Families who enjoy outdoor education and solo travelers looking for a quiet place to disconnect will find this park to be one of the most rewarding stops on their Florida itinerary.

This is a campground. Price is very reasonable at $25 per night for full hookup. Located a short distance from Ft. Pierce it was perfect for our family visit. Staff was friendly as well. Would recommend.

Just there to check out campgrounds for tents . Disappointed that there was zero privacy , close together and no shade . Stopped at the main house and lady was very helpful . Looks like a nice place to take trails but camping is out for me .

The tent area is perfect it has running water and power. The bathrooms and showers are a plus as well. The kids really enjoyed camping here and we caught a lot of fish.

I love this place. Stayed for 6 months. It is affordable. I love that there is so much nature around you. Everyone I have met is friendly. They keep their grounds clean and well kept. We don’t use the bathroom facilities but we were curious to see them. They were clean and had showers. There are laundry and driers on site. I would highly recommend this park.

Really memorable experience camping there. You find yourself surrounded by wildlife and wildlife enthusiasts. If it weren't for the brightline trains going through every 45 minutes it would be a tremendous spot to camp but it kind of spoils it.

Not a very big campground but sufficient. The campground has a small dog park. Enjoyed our last minute stay. We did not have reservations and they accommodated us.

I’m just here to walk around nature… it was a 5 stars prior that new upgrade. It saddens me. I enjoy it until perhaps one day this wildlife won’t exist In florida for the least. I’ll pray it will remain as is. I saw yesterday and today more ciment paved path, but further from the RV park, a new wood bridge and a lot of construction machinery, sadly pulling out tree from ground- I heard for a new bike trail. It’s heartbreaking to see those alligators, pups and other wildlife to have their natural habitat to be destroyed. The more I look the less I see those places 😕

this is our 2nd year spending a couple weeks here in January. we absolutely love it and will be back next year for a longer stay. The walking path is paved and 4 miles into the swamp. there is also a couple miles of paved paths through the camping park for bikes and walkers. Kayaks and bikes to rent at a very reasonable price. pickle ball court and dog parks. picnic pavilions everywhere. the camping spots are large with full hook ups. right now it is $29 a night. you just cannot beat that price. close to lots of beautiful beaches with free parking and life guards. close to everything else you could possibly need. Great area. security locked gates at night. I like to go shelling and make things from my finds. there are lots of apple snail shells here. so I made a tree for the office, it's on the mantel.

Wonderful people and accepts good condition older RVs. The ladies at the office were so wonderful and helpful. The gentlemen doing maintenance were friendly and considerate. The showers were free and hot. I loved the peace there. No loud noises, plenty of walking and the dog park is awesome. I loved walking at night. They do get booked up during the winter so check early.
