Thunder Bay Resort
Overview
Thunder Bay Resort in Hillman offers a distinct experience that combines outdoor adventure with refined hospitality. Unlike a standard roadside stop, this destination is set on 160 acres of rolling terrain in Northeast Michigan’s picturesque landscape. It is widely recognized for its award-winning Elk Viewing Carriage Ride, which provides a unique way to experience local wildlife followed by high-end cuisine. The resort balances rustic beauty with modern comforts, making it a premier choice for RVers seeking more than just a place to park for the night.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Hillman, the resort is surrounded by the lush landscapes of the Thunder Bay River Valley. The area is characterized by dense forests and a sense of seclusion that is rare in busy tourist corridors. It serves as an ideal gateway to the Mackinaw State Forest wilderness, where the air is crisp and life slows down. The property is integrated into the environment, offering scenic vistas of manicured fairways and the surrounding woodlands that change beautifully with the seasons.
Amenities & Park Features
The RV park features oversized sites equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Many sites accommodate big rigs with ease, providing level concrete pads and paved patios for a clean, stable setup. Guests have access to the resort’s acclaimed 18-hole championship golf course and a welcoming clubhouse. The park is meticulously maintained, ensuring that travelers enjoy a seamless stay while remaining close to the resort's dining options and unique event facilities.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While the Elk Viewing Tours are the primary draw, the region offers plenty of exploration. Nearby Alpena, on the shores of Lake Huron, allows visitors to explore the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and its famous shipwrecks. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to Clear Lake State Park and various hiking trails. Fishing and kayaking on the Thunder Bay River are also popular seasonal activities for those who enjoy being on the water and observing local flora and fauna.
Who This Park Is Best For
This resort is suited for couples and active retirees seeking a peaceful, upscale retreat with built-in activities. It is a perfect match for golf enthusiasts who want the convenience of staying steps away from the first tee. Because of the dinner tours and tranquil environment, it also appeals to travelers looking for a luxurious destination-style RV experience rather than a quick overnight stay. It is best for those who appreciate a blend of nature and structured resort amenities.

Booked 4 of us for the elk sighting wagon ride and dinner. Our driver and his assistant were entertaining and informative. I can't say enough about the superior food. An exceptional meal from the shrimp, Asian salad, soup and the dessert😋😋👍👍💕. The kitchen staff was quick and accommodating. We can't come up.with anything negative. Well done Thunder Bay!!!!

Just enjoyed a play and stay at Thunder Bay Resort, leaves are changing color and the weather for fall golf, in the 80's. Nice rooms, with a porch over looking the 2nd fairway . Staff go above and beyond to make you feel at home. Golf was great and the course was in excellent shape. I had sent my brother to Thunder Bay Resort , he and his friends loved it as well. Well worth the drive. Nice and relaxing place to go.

The elk viewing ride and dinner was awesome! Would highly recommend! The rooms are outdated but had everything we needed and clean and no smells! The staff was very friendly and helpful!

After visiting Thunder Bay Resort for over 20 years, it’s disappointing to say this will be our last. The wait staff, bar staff, and cart girls have always been fantastic — friendly, attentive, and a big part of what kept us coming back year after year. Unfortunately, our experience with the current golf course manager, John, has completely changed how we feel about the resort. His unprofessional attitude and condescending behavior toward guests made us feel unwelcome and disrespected. It’s disheartening to be treated that way, especially after being loyal patrons for so long. We truly appreciate the wonderful staff who have always gone above and beyond, but until there are changes in management, we can no longer recommend Thunder Bay Resort.

Staff is amazing! Rooms need some TLC, but from in the process of new owners taking over. I was part of a wedding party, and the staff, especially Sheila, went above and beyond. If you want a place for a quaint wedding, this is the place! The food was incredible, local wines, full bar, and they even take you on a carriage ride through the wildlife reserve. Call them! Book your event here!! You will not regret it. Oh, and... it's on a golf course, and they have an RV park if you'd rather bring your own room.

U get all excited when u hear whirlpool...that bathtub was dirty and I wouldn't sit in that bleaching it out... Beds were fine..spacious room. Bathtub has to get completely re0laced in my opinion...

The room was very outdated for the price. Our tv did not work, and when the housekeeper came to check why our heat wasn’t working, she was very rude. The carriage ride was ok, the dinner was good, but they don’t warn you on how long you will be there (3 hours). It takes a long time, and gets boring with no entertainment besides the strangers they seat you with.

Wow. What a disappointment after reading all the great reviews. Our suite is literally falling apart. All dishes in the kitchen cupboard were dirty and things were very questionable, like the salt and pepper spread all inside the cupboards or the VERY minimal cleaned suite, in general. This place needs some love and care. I def felt beyond dirty when I left. I dislike giving this review, however, people need to understand what a “resort” that hasn’t been updated in 25 years in the middle of nowhere means.

Went on the Elk Tour. Had a blast. Food & drinks were great. Got to see a lot of different elk. Wife is in a wheelchair and they made special accommodations for her, she had a wonderful time too. I not only recommend the experience but will go again.

Great place. Everyone extremely friendly and welcoming. The elk ride was entertaining and the meal was fabulous. I am gluten free and dairy free and the chef made all the accommodations so I could enjoy each course of the meal.
