Tolland State Forest

Overview

Tolland State Forest is a hidden gem nestled in the southern Berkshire Mountains, offering a tranquil retreat centered around the massive Otis Reservoir. This 1,065-acre body of water serves as the heart of the park, drawing visitors who appreciate a rustic, forest-heavy environment. Unlike manicured resorts, this state forest provides a true wilderness experience where the canopy of hardwoods and evergreens creates a private, secluded atmosphere for every camper looking to disconnect from the modern world.

Location & Surroundings

Located in East Otis, MA, the park is situated within a scenic region known for its rolling hills and dense woodlands. It sits conveniently near the border of Connecticut, making it an accessible getaway for those traveling from Hartford or Springfield. The surrounding area is characterized by the Berkshire highlands, providing cool summer breezes and vibrant fall foliage that transforms the landscape into a colorful tapestry each autumn, perfect for scenic drives and photography.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 60 campsites, many of which are situated along the shoreline. For RV travelers, it is important to note that these are primitive sites without electric or water hookups, making it ideal for self-contained rigs or those prepared to dry camp. The park provides essential comforts including accessible restrooms and showers, a dedicated swimming beach with a seasonal lifeguard, and a paved boat ramp for easy access to the reservoir's expansive waters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the primary draw, with ample opportunities for boating, kayaking, and fishing for bass and trout. Beyond the water, the park offers miles of multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking, including the popular Farmington River Trail nearby. Those looking to explore the local culture can take a short drive to the world-renowned Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival or visit the charming shops and galleries in the nearby historic towns of Lee and Stockbridge.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is best suited for boating enthusiasts and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, off-grid experience over modern luxuries. It is a perfect fit for RVers with smaller trailers or camper vans who enjoy the simplicity of camping in exchange for unparalleled access to water and woods. If your ideal trip involves waking up to the sound of loons and spending evenings under a dense forest canopy, Tolland State Forest is an excellent choice for your next adventure.

Great Park! The lake was crystal clear and the evening was extremely quiet. Definitely going back when it gets colder 🤗

If you have a boat and/or like camping and want beautiful peaceful place to go then don’t hesitate to go to Otis Reservoir and the Tolland State Forest. Otis Reservoir is the largest “recreational” body of water in Massachusetts - (not the largest body of water). It is a great option for boating, water sports and fishing. Tolland State Forest offers State and private campgrounds. Both campgrounds are great and offer different options for camping. The reservoir and campgrounds offer unending memories for families and friends. The reservoir is patrolled by the Massachusetts Environmental Police and requires all boats, boaters and fishermen to follow all state laws and regulations while on the reservoir or banks.

This is becoming a favorite campground for my family. Nice beach, except for the jet skis that fly past. The fishing is also not great. But it does offer good amenities otherwise and if you want to boat your right on the water.

Gorgeous! Great camp sites, pristine lakefront. Bathrooms were pretty clean as well. We were at site 39 and were in walking distance from the beach.

So for 2025 this park took one of the best camping sites for the season and presumably made it a host site since it’s blocked out for all of the primary season that myself and 40 frequent regular travelers alike all use, I mean a lot of of us actually on reserve America wait for that site to open and I have to plan my summer vacation as of March . It’s across from the bathhouse. It’s a flat level lot. It’s easy access for the boat and to the people that oversee this operation you know exactly which site I’m talking about Very unfair that you made that what looks like a host site. It’s one of the best sites and one of the reasons we’ve frequent your park. I’m not sure who to contact in the state of Massachusetts regarding our level of disappointment in the management at this facility, but we will be reaching out.

Camped for 3 days on the lake. Could not have been more perfect. Barely any bugs. Very clean areas. Very clean bathrooms. Staff was more then helpful. There a country store not too far. Woth anything you might need or forgot. I brought my canoe and kayaks. So was able to just get up and go out. Will definitely be going many more times.

We love this campground. Every year we make sure to make at least one trip becuse it can't be beat. Nice and quiet. We'll maintained and spaced out sites. The beach and guided nature events are awesome too. It's always a high point when the family knows we are going.
