Tommy Turtle Park

Overview

Tommy Turtle Park serves as a welcoming gateway to the scenic Turtle Mountains region of North Dakota. Named after the massive snowmobile-riding turtle statue that famously greets visitors at the entrance, this city-managed park offers a relaxed atmosphere for travelers. It effectively combines community recreation spaces with dedicated RV accommodations, making it a reliable and friendly base for those exploring the Four Seasons Playground surrounding Bottineau.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the northern edge of the city, the park is surrounded by lush green spaces and mature trees that provide a sense of enclosure. It offers a convenient transition between the small-town charm of Bottineau and the rugged natural beauty of the Turtle Mountain plateau. Travelers will find themselves within easy reach of local dining and supplies while enjoying the quiet, open sky typical of the North Dakota landscape.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides essential comforts for RVers, including sites with full hookups and reasonably level pads. Guests have access to clean restroom facilities and showers, which are consistently well-maintained by the local park district. For families, the property features a modern playground and expansive picnic areas, ensuring that both children and pets have plenty of space to stretch their legs after a long day of travel through the prairies.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the famous Tommy Turtle statue is the most photographed spot on-site, the area serves as a significant hub for outdoor recreation. A short drive north leads to Lake Metigoshe State Park, famous for its clear waters, boating, and extensive hiking trails. History buffs and nature lovers should also visit the International Peace Garden, located nearby on the border, offering stunning floral displays and quiet reflection in a unique international setting.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for family road trippers looking for a safe, accessible spot with plenty of room for evening activities. It is also an excellent choice for adventure seekers who need a functional and affordable home base while exploring the hidden forests and lakes of North Dakota. If you value a community-oriented environment and proximity to local services, this park provides the perfect balance of comfort and local character.

Unexpected to find an RV park at a welcome center. Had it not been for seeing Tommy the Turtle from across the highway from the walmart, I wouldn't have looked over there at all. Many campsites, either full hookup ($20/night) or primate, but water is available as are showers! The shower was totally unexpected. There are play structures, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, event shelters, and grills. This one park has it all!

Tommy the Turtle is huge There is a visitor center Basketball court with 6 hoops 3 baseball fields tennis courts with pickleball courts too picnic areas playgrounds public restrooms Gaga pit (a game kids play) Well maintained and beautiful Dog-friendly But it's in such an odd location (small town in North Dakota). I wish I had this near me. There was nobody playing Basketball both times I came, meaning I had no one to play with. So it's nice, but you need to bring your own friends.

We stayed here for two nights in our RV. The playground and park is beautiful and very well kept! The parking spaces are $20 per night and come with full hookups. The one downside was the water is extremely hard and smells like it too. My water quality meter was reading well over 500 ppm which exceeds epa standards… even after going through our two onboard water filters. The spaces were nearly all full when we arrived. Seems many are traveling workers who stay for months or more at a time. Still, everything seemed clean and well kept.
