Tongass/Last Chance
Overview
Tucked away in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, Last Chance Campground offers travelers a truly immersive Alaskan experience. This scenic destination serves as a tranquil escape from the bustling cruise ship docks of Ketchikan, providing a quiet atmosphere surrounded by ancient trees. It is one of the few spots near the city where you can park your rig and immediately feel the vastness of the Pacific Northwest wilderness. This is not a typical resort; it is a place for reflection and connection with nature.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just nine miles north of downtown Ketchikan, the park is nestled along the banks of Ward Creek and is adjacent to the popular Ward Lake recreation area. The surrounding environment is a lush, temperate rainforest filled with Sitka spruce and western hemlock. The air is often misty, and the sound of the flowing creek provides a constant, calming soundtrack. Being located on Revillagigedo Island, visitors are perfectly positioned to explore both the coastline and the dense interior forests that define Southeast Alaska.
Amenities & Park Features
Visitors should expect a rustic, dry-camping experience as there are no electric or water hookups available at the sites. Each spot is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table, ideal for evening meals under the forest canopy. The park provides vault toilets and access to hand-pumped water, though seasoned RVers often arrive with full freshwater tanks. One of the greatest features is the natural privacy between sites, as the thick vegetation acts as a living screen, ensuring a sense of solitude rarely found in commercial parks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find themselves in a prime location for exploration. The Ward Lake Trail offers an easy, scenic loop around the water, while more challenging paths like the Perseverance Trail lead deeper into the mountains. Fishing is a major draw here, with opportunities to catch salmon during the annual runs in the nearby creeks. Just a short drive away, the city of Ketchikan offers cultural gems like the Totem Heritage Center and the historic Creek Street boardwalk, where you can learn about the local Tlingit and Haida cultures.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty over modern luxuries. If you enjoy waking up to the smell of damp cedar and the sight of bald eagles overhead, this is the place for you. It is perfect for budget-conscious travelers and those seeking a quiet home base while exploring the wonders of the Tongass National Forest. If your travel style involves disconnecting from the grid to reconnect with the wild, Last Chance is a premier choice in the Ketchikan area.
