Tonto/Christopher Creek Campground
Overview
Nestled within the expansive Tonto National Forest, Christopher Creek Campground offers a refreshing mountain retreat at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet. This destination is a favorite for travelers looking to trade the desert heat for the shade of towering Ponderosa pines. The campground provides a classic forest experience where the sound of flowing water and the scent of pine needles define your stay, offering a peaceful alternative to high-traffic urban parks.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 20 miles east of Payson, Arizona, the park is positioned near the base of the Mogollon Rim. The site is divided by the spring-fed Christopher Creek, which flows year-round through the heart of the campground. This lush riparian corridor creates a vibrant ecosystem, offering a stark and beautiful contrast to the surrounding high-country terrain and making it one of the most scenic riparian areas in the region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on a rustic connection to nature. While there are no full hookups, the park provides essential facilities for comfortable dry camping:
- Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water
- Individual fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables
- Paved parking spurs for RVs and trailers
RVers should note that space is limited to rigs typically under 30 feet, making it an ideal spot for compact motorhomes and travel trailers looking for a genuine forest experience without the distractions of modern technology.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore just steps from their campsite. The See Canyon Trail is a popular choice for hikers, winding upward toward the rim for spectacular vistas of the Arizona landscape. Anglers often visit the creek to test their luck for trout, while families enjoy wading in the shallow waters during the summer months. A short drive away, the small community of Christopher Creek offers local eateries and basic supplies for a convenient supply run.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is perfectly suited for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty and tranquility over resort-style amenities. It is a premier choice for those seeking a cool summer getaway or a quiet autumn retreat during the changing of the leaves. If your travel style involves off-grid camping and falling asleep to the sounds of a babbling brook, this forest gem is the place for you.

Cristopher Creek Campground (CCC) was amazing! I have passed by this place 100 times but never stopped- My wife and I used this short trip to test the boon-docking capabilities of our RV trailer but found it to be so enjoyable! We were in site 35 and have a 20 foot trailer with bed pop-outs on front and back making is about a 30' end-to-end and it fit perfectly. Best-part was we were surrounded by the mountain and it felt like our own heaven. I recently returned from a two week camping trip in the Eastern Sierras and, unfortunately, had to deal with a jerk of a camp host. When we arrived the CCC, Cheryl was quick to come and meet with us and was friendly as ever! Her trips around the campground (about twice a day) was perfect. She kept the place well-maintained and beautiful at all times! Such a breath of fresh air! IN every single way! Thank you! See you next time!

Amazing campground, plenty of room to set up. There is table, grill tops, fireplace and a bear safe. The host Sharon was extremely friendly and helpful! Life saver on the way out when our car wouldn’t start and she jumped us off! Much appreciated!!💕 We’ll definitely be back, campground was very well maintained. Bathrooms were very clean, the smell is obviously unavoidable. Beautiful views and lots of wildlife to enjoy.

First time camping as a family and this was definitely an awesome experience, no body in your business just you and nature. The outhouse was clean just smelt awful 😂 nothing you can do about that. I was expecting more hiking options but you kinda just had to make your own path and hope for the best. My kids loved it (3 and 1 years old). Will definitely return with my extended family. Thank you everyone!

We've been camping at christopher creek for the past decade and it is always reliable for a relaxing time. I would recommend staying in the b loop as it's a little more spacious and backs to the creek. My son has thoroughly enjoyed exploring the creek from when he was 5 to now 16 . It is very clean and we'll kept. Only a 20 minute drive to woods canyon lake and 20 minutes from the nearest grocery store. Christopher creek is the best camp grounds to make long lasting memories.

This is a wonderful campsite that is pretty well maintained. The camp hosts are friendly and informative. This is a go to place for me and my 2nd time going this year. The sad part is the creek is dry and there's barely any water in it. The pictures of the creek in this post was from June. I'm hoping the creek will fill up again soon.

Dusty and Cindy were so welcoming and kept up on the fire restrictions and made us feel so safe with the dry forest. They also kept up the campground by keeping bathrooms sparkling and picked up trash from the campers and groomed the grounds. Thank you Dusty and Cindy!!!!

To the amazing park ranger on June 12th 2025, I will forever be grateful for you and your time helping fix our broken down vehicle at the campgrounds. We were completely stranded and he was so generous to help us in any way that he could. You will forever be in our hearts forgetting myself and my baby boys back to the valley safely.

Lovely campground situated around Christopher Creek. Potable water, grills, fire pits, and pit toilets. Popular place with lots of kids and families around. Make sure you have headlamps for after dark and are physically prepared for the cold plunge temperatures that happen overnight.

It has amazing campsites! Easter weekend they were all first come first serve and they are all great sites. Of course, some are better than others. They have bear proof lock boxes at each campsite to secure wood and other items. They have fire pits and grills at each site as well. It did decide to snow Friday night so it got pretty cold but it made for a beautiful Easter weekend out of the Valley ❤️🏕️
