Traverse City KOA

Overview

The Traverse City KOA Holiday offers a classic Northern Michigan camping experience set across forty acres of mature forest. This park balances the rustic feel of the woods with the modern conveniences travelers expect from the KOA Holiday brand. It serves as a quiet retreat for those looking to escape the bustle of the city while remaining close enough to enjoy local excursions. Visitors often appreciate the wooded campsites that provide a sense of privacy and natural beauty throughout the season.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the small community of Buckley, this campground is positioned roughly fifteen miles south of the Traverse City shoreline. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills, fruit orchards, and dense pine forests. Staying here allows RVers to enjoy a peaceful, rural atmosphere away from the heavy tourist traffic of the main bay area. Its location makes it a strategic basecamp for exploring the Grand Traverse region and the diverse landscapes of the Manistee National Forest.

Amenities & Park Features

Guests have access to a variety of on-site features designed for both relaxation and recreation. The park includes a heated outdoor pool and a large jump pad that are popular with younger travelers. For those traveling with pets, the dedicated KampK9 area offers a fenced space for dogs to exercise. Other practical amenities include full hookup sites, modern laundry facilities, and a well-stocked general store. On weekends, the park often hosts themed activities and wagon rides, creating a lively community atmosphere.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A short drive north brings you to the vibrant downtown of Traverse City, known for its gourmet dining and annual National Cherry Festival. Nature lovers can spend a day exploring the towering bluffs at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore or visiting the many public beaches along Lake Michigan. The region is also famous for its Old Mission Peninsula wineries and the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Whether you prefer hiking, fishing, or shopping, the park’s proximity to these landmarks provides endless itinerary options.

Who This Park Is Best For

This KOA is an ideal fit for family vacationers who want a mix of scheduled activities and natural surroundings. It is also well-suited for big-rig owners seeking spacious pull-through sites that are easy to navigate. Because it sits slightly outside the main tourist hub, it appeals to travelers who prefer a quieter evening environment after a day of sightseeing. We had a great week here. It was easy access to the Sleeping Bear Sand dunes NS, close to Traverse city for needs, and small towns with food options. The KOA had lots of fun kid activities during the stay, mini golf for free, pool, jump pad, and any RC course ! Ice, firewood and pizza can be delivered to to your site. Trash pickup up every morning. We had a great stay.

We stay at KOA for the amenities. Yes, it’s more pricey than some parks but we like that we know what to expect from KOA. We stayed in one of the new pull through full hook up sites, it was spacious but not shady. They planted new trees so some shade will come. The pool is nice. They only have one shower house, I think they plan to add another but it’s not built yet. The showers were clean and the laundry was convenient. The pool was fantastic. We enjoyed the free mini golf. Definitely go eat at Patty Cakes!

Absolutely amazing experience. They are so accommodating here! They have someone take you to your campsite when you first arrive, they take your trash, clean out your fire pit, deliver fire wood and pizza and other things. The store is awesome, kids LOVED the train and foam party. I love that they send you texts reminding you of upcoming events. This place was so well maintained, clean, quiet, and the other campers were kind and respectful. My husband and I agreed this will be one of our go-to camping spots every year.

This is by far one of the best KOA campgrounds we have ever stayed at. Beautiful site. Clean facilities. And the staff was amazing. The best part was their maintenance man Richard. He was super friendly and treated my children with kindness and made the days fun. Super helpful and just an awesome dude. You have to stay here if you are in the Traverse city area. Thanks again for a wonderful vacation.

We had a great stay at the KOA in Traverse City! The campground is clean, well-run, and in a perfect location for exploring the area. The sites were spacious and well maintained, and we appreciated how quiet it was in the evenings. Also, the new upgrades to the campground are a welcomed upgrade! The kids loved the pool and the jumping pillow, and there were plenty of activities to keep them busy while we relaxed around the fire. The staff was friendly and helpful, making sure we had everything we needed during our stay. The pizza delivery has been a nice addition this trip! Bathrooms and showers were clean, and the camp store was well stocked with anything we forgot. We also enjoyed how close it was to downtown Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and the local wineries. Highly recommend this KOA if you’re looking for a family-friendly, comfortable base to explore northern Michigan. We look forward to staying again on our next trip up!

They've continued to expand and improve this park since we were here several years ago. It's clean, well laid out, level and mostly shaded except the newest sites (although trees are planted). Great location for visiting Traverse City, and far enough out to relax at end of day. M37 highway does have a pretty constant traffic noise, but most sites are set back from it. WiFi is surprisingly good. Staff was professional and friendly. Bathrooms were clean, but showing age and they're about big enough where adding a second bath house would be a good idea. We really liked their nightly text reminding about the beginning of quiet hours. One of the better KOAs we've stayed at on an extended RV trip. Highly recommended.

Very clean and well kept sites. I liked the spots around the edges of property. Middle area where we were pretty populated but very nice sites. Pool spectacular. Bathrooms clean! Staff as friendly as if we were family. Many many things for kids to do. Definitely recommend this KOA.

The RC track was very unique. I have never seen a RC track in a KOA before! The swimming pool was great and the customer service was very friendly. The mini golf and gem mining was amazing. The playground was very kid-friendly. The showers are nice and spacious. There was giant chess and checkers right next to mini golf. Also the cabins looked very nice from the outside and based on the pictures, they looked outstanding inside! There were two jumping pillows for the kids to jump on. The camp store was very nicely organized and had a lot of things too. As long as you aren't right next to a road, it is quiet. The RV and tent spots aren't paved though, so if you don't like that don't come here. The KOA Patio spots are nice. The whole place is very family friendly. I would recommend coming here!

We stayed here for 3 nights while exploring the Traverse City area. The campground is not far south of town, about 15 to 20 minutes. We were able to conveniently drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes and several light houses. The campground is very quiet (we stayed during the week). Many of the sites are very shaded while some of the new area is direct sunlight most of the day (they have trees planted so this should get better in years to come). The pool was clean and warm. The store was recently updated and was nice. We would recommend staying here if you are visiting Traverse City!

Clean, beautiful, family-friendly campsite! We've been a fan of KOA for a long time and the location in Traverse City is excellent. Our campsite was well-maintained, the bathing and bathroom facilities were excellent, and there were lots of activities for our kids. There is a daily trolley ride for kids around the campsite, plus mini golf, the pool, and arts and crafts during certain evenings. The camp store is well-stocked, and the staff is attentive and friendly. Excellent campsite!
