Treetop Nature Trail of Alabama Wildlife Center

Overview

The Alabama Wildlife Center, located within the expansive Oak Mountain State Park, provides a unique nature-focused destination for travelers. While the center itself is a rehabilitation facility for native birds, its standout feature is the Treetop Nature Trail. This elevated boardwalk allows visitors to observe wildlife from a unique vantage point, blending seamlessly with the forest canopy. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate quiet, natural surroundings and an immersive outdoor experience during their RV journey.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Pelham, Alabama, this location is nestled within Oak Mountain State Park, the state's largest park. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills, dense hardwoods, and diverse ecosystems that offer a genuine escape from urban noise. RVers will find themselves surrounded by lush woodlands, making it a scenic stopover. The proximity to the Birmingham metropolitan area ensures that essential supplies are never far away while maintaining a distinct sense of wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

The Treetop Nature Trail is an accessible, elevated boardwalk that stretches nearly half a mile through the treetops. This feature provides a rare opportunity to view local wildlife and avian inhabitants without disrupting their natural environment. The trail is well-maintained and designed to be visitor-friendly, offering benches and informational signage along the way. While not a traditional RV resort with typical hookups, the location provides ample parking for vehicles within the larger state park infrastructure.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the Treetop Nature Trail, guests can explore miles of mountain biking trails and hiking paths that crisscross the park. The Alabama Wildlife Center also hosts educational programs, allowing guests to see non-releasable birds of prey up close. Nearby, the city of Pelham offers diverse dining options and local boutiques for those who want a blend of nature and convenience. Lake habitats in the park are also available for kayaking and fishing enthusiasts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers who prefer peaceful, scenic environments over high-activity campgrounds. It is an excellent fit for families looking to balance outdoor education with physical recreation. Because the area is integrated into the larger state park, it is best suited for travelers who value wilderness exploration and a quiet atmosphere. If you enjoy waking up to the sounds of the forest, this Pelham location is an ideal choice.

It's great that birds are being rehabbed here. Reptiles are way cooler.

Although I visited Oak Mountain multiple times, I never made it to the Treetop Natural Trail. Along the short trail, you can witness a few rescued birds.

Short boardwalk with many educational stops with live predator birds. Lots of vertical steps and very educational

Enjoyed my stop by today at the wildlife center but it seemed a little outdated and a lot of the exhibits were in repair or under construction. I see a lot of potential in the future and hope to see good things here. On a side note....the interpretive center was a fail because I had nothing to interpret....

Really nice short walk. We went late in the day and it wasn't hot at all. We went to see the owls, vultures, and hawks. That was the coolest. The first owl was being very vocal for us until I tried to film it.

There is no need to keep birds emprisoned just for the amusement of some kids and their parents while next to these cages is the forest they live in.

Our family loves this short, elevated trail. If you like raptors or nature, you will too. The trail consists of pens with hawks and owls that can’t be released into the wild again. It’s educational it’s beautifullay built as well. Sometimes you’re there at feeding time, and you can ask questions or hear a talk about the different birds, which is great for the kids. We come here at least once a month. It also has a short trail from the Treetop Trail up to the Alabama Wildlife rehabilitation center in Oak Mountain State Park
