Tygart Lake

Overview

Tygart Lake State Park offers a peaceful retreat nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Known for having some of the clearest water in West Virginia, this park provides a scenic backdrop for RV travelers looking to escape the hustle of city life. The park manages a 10-mile long lake that serves as the centerpiece for all recreational activities, maintaining a quiet and secluded atmosphere that appeals to nature lovers. Whether you are staying for a weekend or a longer stretch, the park balances rustic charm with necessary conveniences for a comfortable outdoor stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Grafton, WV, the park is easily accessible yet feels worlds away from modern distractions. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep ridges and lush forests that overlook the expansive 1,750-acre reservoir. RVers will appreciate the winding scenic drives leading to the park, though it is important to navigate the mountain roads with care. The proximity to the Tygart River ensures that the landscape remains vibrant and green throughout the peak travel seasons, offering stunning reflections on the water's surface.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground accommodates RVs with a mix of site types, including electric and water hookups to support various rig sizes. Visitors have access to centrally located bathhouses featuring hot showers and modern restrooms. For the convenience of self-contained travelers, a standard dump station is available on-site. Each campsite typically includes a fire ring and a picnic table, encouraging outdoor cooking and evening relaxation. The park also features a full-service marina, providing easy access for those traveling with boats or looking to rent watercraft during their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with opportunities for boating, water skiing, and scuba diving in the deep, clear waters. Anglers frequently visit to test their skills against walleye, muskie, and bass. For those who prefer land-based activities, the park offers several miles of hiking trails that weave through the hardwood forests. Just a short drive away, history buffs can visit the International Mother's Day Shrine in Grafton or explore the scenic Valley Falls State Park, which features impressive waterfalls and additional picnicking areas.

Who This Park Is Best For

Tygart Lake is an ideal destination for families and fishing enthusiasts who prioritize water access and a tranquil environment over high-speed resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy a back-to-basics experience without sacrificing essential utilities. If you travel with a boat or enjoy lakeside hiking and photography, this park fits your travel style perfectly. It is best suited for those seeking a slow-paced getaway where the primary entertainment is the natural beauty of the West Virginia highlands.

We had lunch at the lodge restaurant and it was perfect. We had a great view of the lake and we sat at the patio. Food was great and service was good.

We came here for a family lunch last Sunday and it couldn't have been a better time. Amazing food, service, and views. Everyone was so nice and the gift shop was a huge plus!

AC unit was very loud and didn't function well. Rooms are dated, not much different than 20 yrs ago. Although, there was new mirrors, and soft clean linens.

This just a review of the restaurant. We went for there Valentine's Day Special on Sunday it was very quiet probably due to the weather and we came at 5 when they close at 6 on Sunday. Staff was very friendly some of the options were out but we were able to substitute anything for the same price. Example they were out of Cheesecake but offered any other dessert they had. Food was very good except they use the oil on the garlic bread that I'm not a fan of but other than that everything was delicious. Can't wait to go back in the summer and have nice views of the lake eating out on the patio.
