Uinta/Granite Flat

Overview

Granite Flat Campground offers a serene mountain escape within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Located just a short drive from the Provo area, this USFS facility provides a classic forest experience characterized by towering evergreens, quaking aspens, and crisp alpine air. It is a preferred destination for those looking to trade the city heat for higher elevations and rustic tranquility. The park’s atmosphere is deeply immersive, allowing visitors to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature in one of Utah's most iconic canyons.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in American Fork Canyon, the park is surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Wasatch Range. The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, right along the scenic Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, offering stunning views of the backside of Mount Timpanogos. Its location provides easy access to the silver waters of Tibble Fork Reservoir, making it a lush, green contrast to the urban sprawl of Utah County located just a few miles down the canyon road.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service site, meaning it focuses on a natural experience over high-tech additions. The campground features several loops with unique characteristics designed for different needs:

  • Paved parking spurs designed to accommodate various RV and trailer lengths.
  • Well-maintained vault toilets located conveniently throughout the camp loops.
  • Large group sites available for bigger gatherings and family reunions.

Each individual site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and a sturdy picnic table for outdoor dining. While there are no water or electrical hookups available at the sites, potable water is provided through central spigots, and the park is highly regarded for its spacious, shaded sites that offer excellent privacy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity near the campground. The nearby Tibble Fork Reservoir is a central hub for paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow trout. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore the Silver Lake Flat Trail or take the short drive to visit the underground wonders of the Timpanogos Cave National Monument. For those who prefer a slower pace, the Alpine Loop provides one of the state's most famous drives, which is particularly breathtaking during the autumn leaf change when the canyon glows with vibrant color.

Who This Park Is Best For

Granite Flat is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for families looking to introduce children to the wonders of the national forest and for hikers and anglers wanting to be steps away from their next trailhead or fishing hole. If you enjoy dry camping under a dense canopy of trees and appreciate the quietude of the mountains, this high-altitude retreat is an excellent choice for your next Utah adventure.

We love this campground! It's a beautiful area and seemed to be very well maintained; however, despite the campground being "open", the gate to the campground was closed and locked making it impossible for vehicles to enter the campground. We had to park in the parking spaces outside the campground by the grate and hike in and out with our camping gear and three kiddos.

Been here about 4 or 5 times. Such a beautiful and well kept campground. Paved roads all the way up really easy access and the rates for camp sites is very reasonable. Highly recommend it.

Phenomenal single campground. Plenty of space. Picnic table, fire pit, and grill included.

Great campsite, and the camp hosts are really nice. We took a large youth group to Granite Flat campground recently and they loved it! Couldn't go all the way to 5 stars due to the horrendous signs navigating you to your campsites. A lot of people got misdirected and turned around, but strangely they haven't improved them at all. It seems like it would be a simple low cost fix to avoid future frustration for people unfamiliar with the site.
