Uinta/Timpooneke

Overview

Timpooneke Campground offers a quintessential mountain experience within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Located just a short drive from Provo, this high-elevation destination is a favorite for those looking to immerse themselves in Utah’s rugged beauty. It serves as a primary basecamp for adventurers preparing to summit Mount Timpanogos, providing a serene environment where the scent of pine and the rustle of aspen leaves define the atmosphere. It is a peaceful escape that feels worlds away from the nearby urban centers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the breathtaking Alpine Scenic Loop, the park is tucked away in the upper reaches of American Fork Canyon. At an elevation of approximately 7,200 feet, the surroundings transition into a lush landscape of spruce, fir, and aspen trees. The location offers a dramatic backdrop of limestone cliffs and vibrant wildflowers during the summer months, providing a cool sanctuary when the valley floor near Provo reaches peak temperatures. The drive alone is a highlight for many travelers.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, Timpooneke focuses on a rustic experience rather than resort luxuries. The park features paved parking spurs suitable for smaller RVs and trailers, though it is important to note there are no hookups or dump stations available. Guests have access to potable water during the peak season and vault toilets are located throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a campfire ring, making it easy to enjoy an authentic outdoor living experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw is the Timpooneke Trail, which leads hikers through giant glacial basins to the top of Mount Timpanogos. For those who prefer water activities, the nearby Tibble Fork Reservoir is perfect for fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding in alpine waters. A drive further along the Scenic Loop takes visitors to Cascade Springs, where accessible boardwalks wind through crystal-clear pools and small waterfalls, offering excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities within the forest.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize access to nature over modern electronic amenities. It is best suited for small-to-mid-sized RV owners who are comfortable with dry camping and want to beat the crowds to the local trailheads. If your travel style involves waking up at the foot of a mountain and spending your days exploring the backcountry or driving scenic mountain passes, Timpooneke provides the perfect, tranquil home base for your Utah adventure.

Spectacular campground. We were there in the middle of July. The highs were in the '70s to '80s, the lows in the '50s almost in the '40s overnight. It rained once but it's beautiful. Very nice. Very clean campground. Lots of shade.

Awesome location, beautiful campsites, we were in the yurt #29, lots of space and not close to neighbors. Will definitely be back

This hike was absolutely beautiful. It was 1.5 miles to Scout Fall. We had kids ages 5-14 and they all did great. It was 90 degrees when we went at 9am and the trail is only in the shade about 20% of the time. I would suggest going earlier or when it isn't so hot. Highly recommend this hike for all ages, definitely worth the view when you get to the falls.

Gorgeous, peaceful location. Great camp hosts. Extra cars are $10/day even if only briefly there recreating with campers. This is typical of most campgrounds in Utah. Some sites are smaller and can be hard to fit two tents.

We stayed at Group site 2, and it was perfect. Lots of shade. Plenty of spots to pitch our tents. Enough parking area for all of our vehicles. There was a little creek that ran through the middle of the campsite that the kids enjoyed playing in. The camp hosts were great! We will definitely be back to camp here again! *The website says there is a gate that is locked from 10 pm to 7 am. No such gate exists anymore.*
