Union Grove

Overview

Union Grove State Park is a quiet, tree-filled oasis located in southeastern South Dakota. Unlike the wide-open prairies often associated with the region, this park offers a lush canopy of deciduous trees that provides deep shade and a cool breeze for RVers. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape highway noise while remaining conveniently accessible to the Interstate 29 corridor.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Beresford and north of Elk Point, the park is nestled within a scenic wooded valley. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling hills and vast agricultural land, but once you pull into the park, you are immediately enveloped by dense timber and native flora. This makes it a true hidden gem for travelers moving through the southeastern corner of the state who need a break from the sun.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-spaced sites equipped with electric hookups that accommodate most modern RVs. While it maintains a rustic state park atmosphere, visitors have access to several key features:

  • Modern shower facilities and vault toilets
  • On-site dump station and fresh water access
  • Picnic shelters and a community playground

These amenities ensure a comfortable stay while remaining deeply immersed in the natural environment near Brule Creek.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the variety of multi-use trails that wind through the woods, which are perfect for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Birdwatchers often visit to spot native species hiding in the thick undergrowth throughout the seasons. If you need a change of pace, the city of Beresford is nearby for local shopping, while the cultural attractions of Sioux Falls are just a thirty-minute drive to the north.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for nature lovers and birdwatchers who prefer a quiet, shaded environment over a crowded commercial resort. It is perfect for families seeking a simple weekend getaway or cross-country travelers needing a restful overnight stop with significantly more character than a standard roadside park. If you value a small, intimate camping experience surrounded by lush greenery, this park will fit your travel style perfectly.

Nice Area, Staff is very nice and welcoming. The kiosk to pay is broken but the host comes around for payment and needs. Non-resident day fee is $15 camping w/ electric is $30. The camp site is very clean, small but offers a shower house, bathrooms, park for kids, trails to hike (really cool I might add!), and even a free library stand! Dump station and water when you enter the park as well! Good find here & I will mark it to Return!

Wow! This park won my heart ❤️ In the Sioux Falls surroundings, my favorite parks have been just Big Sioux Recreation Area, Newton Hills, and Lake Vermillion. But now, this one is definitely one of my top favorites. The park is well maintained, the restrooms are clean, and the Camp Manager Rose was such a nice lady. She and her husband gave us really good tips on how to construct me and my husband's future to work together in Parks *Shout-out to Rose!* Highly recommend visiting this park!!

Update: trails need maintenance. Very small compared to most of the state parks with only one camping loop. The trails are great foot trails and were rated our best hike this year by the children. Camping is quiet and secluded with very nice bathrooms. Downside is there isn't much else to do like swimming or kayaking or fishing.

if you’re looking for the quiet, small campsite - this is your place! it has the most beautiful views of the sunsets, lots of hiking/horse trails. the park has really interesting history, and it’s just a nice, peaceful area to unwind and unplug.

We had one unfortunate issue and that was the kiosk that sold the passes was not working as the screen seemed to be black. I thought it would update once we started the transaction but the screen was not working at all. I called the number indicated on the information board and the gal was very helpful in getting me a day pass and taking note about our situation with the kiosk. I hope they will be able to get it fixed cause that is a very nice feature to get a day pass. We had a great time walking the trails and enjoying the little adventure we went one. We did go between the October 1 and April 1 time frame which is a time when they allow hunters to open him in the area. That being said, I would have been more comfortable if I had worn orange but I didn't realize ahead of time. We had a wonderful time and I would recommend it. Looks like it would be a great place for ridding horses and enjoy camping.
