Known for its diverse topography, the park features rugged hills, deep valleys, and the picturesque Frog Hollow Lake. It serves as a sanctuary for travelers who appreciate the natural beauty of the Driftless Area. This state recreation area provides a peaceful backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts looking to reconnect with nature while enjoying reliable facilities for their RV stay.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Fayette, IA, the park is characterized by its scenic limestone bluffs and the winding Volga River. The surrounding landscape is a mix of dense timber and open prairies, creating a vibrant ecosystem for local wildlife. Because it sits away from major metropolitan noise, visitors experience a true sense of seclusion. The area is particularly striking during the autumn months when the hardwood forests transform into a vibrant display of seasonal color.

Amenities & Park Features

The Lakeview Campground serves as the primary hub for RVers, offering both electric and non-electric sites. Many sites are equipped with 50-amp service to accommodate modern rigs. The park provides essential infrastructure, including a modern shower building, restrooms, and a convenient dump station. For those traveling with horses, the park is well-regarded for its extensive equestrian trails and dedicated hitching rails, making it a versatile choice for different types of outdoor travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the main draw here, with over 20 miles of multi-use trails available for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Frog Hollow Lake is a popular spot for kayaking and fishing for crappie or largemouth bass. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the Montauk Historic Site in nearby Clermont or visit the local shops in Fayette. Echo Valley State Park is also a short drive away, providing even more opportunities for trail exploration and nature photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

Volga River SRA is ideal for nature photographers and hikers who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over a crowded resort environment. It is a fantastic destination for birdwatchers and those traveling with horses due to the specialized trail access. Great place to camp and ride your horse. Beautiful in the fall.

This is a hidden gem! The campgrounds offers sewer, water, and electric to all their sites, some cement parking pads but the rest are nice and level, and great spacing between the sites. There are plenty of nicely mowed trails to hike, short and long distances, and it’s set in beautiful limestones bluffs and tall grass prairies. So quiet, far away from any busy road.

Campground doesn't have shade. The sites were spaced apart nicely and many full hook up. There is a lake and a river that are nice. 22 miles of trails, just no shade. Would be OK for cool weather camping.

Camped here recently on September on a weekend. Nice big sites, and part of the campground has concrete pads for the camper to set on. There is a winery just outside of the park. The campground is close to Fayette and West Union. Fayette has a great eatery called DTs Pub and Primetime Pizza. Pizza is great! West Union has more eateries, grocery store, hardware store, farm store, etc. Great campground!

Volga River offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation. We spent several nights at the campground (very nice and modern; see separate reviews), and spent the days hiking the multi-use trails. We saw a number of individuals fishing at the beautiful lake. The trails are wide to accommodate multi-use (hiking, bikes, equestrian, and snow mobile). Most of the trails are pretty easy with sections of inclines due to the hills in the area. Trails were generally well marked and easy to follow. The most difficult part of the trails were the long sections that had been covered in thick layers of sand. We ran into some locals who told us the sand was laid to help with erosion control. Otherwise. The trails and scenery were enjoyable.

Nice quiet Campground. Not every site has water, so be sure to double check. Our electric was sketchy but the staff was quick to come fix it (switched out the breakers). Be sure to have your regulator on. Fishing was so so. Hubby caught one catfish but that was it. There was no checkin, but DNR came around as we were parking. Nice guys.

This was my second time here, trails were well maintained until we got to the so-called scenic overlook off frog hollow trail. Led us to a dead end. If you think that is scenic, you need to get out more, other than that was nice, and had to cross the creek once since it ran thru the path.

This is a beautiful Iowa State Park and campground. The campground is clean with LARGE lots and many full hookups. The bathrooms and shower rooms are also clean and well maintained. The river is good for kayaking and swimming (average depth 2-3 ft when we went). Great place with room for activities!

This summer (2020) going here to go hiking on the trails was a great way to get out of the house and still stay socially distant from others. We went on 3 different trails there. Each great in there own way. One time we took our dogs out with us and they loved it. There's not just trails, there's the Volga Lake to fish from and there's trout streams all over there as well. Theres camping (we haven't done there since we don't live far from there). You can go horse back riding on some of the trails as well. So check them out and see what other things they may have to offer that I didn't mention ....oh and Heavens Winery is very close by as well check them out too.
