W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds Campground
Overview
W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds Campground serves as a practical and reliable base for RVers visiting the largest city in South Dakota. Unlike a secluded resort, this park offers a utilitarian atmosphere that focuses on convenience and accessibility for travelers. Managed by the fairgrounds staff, it provides a straightforward camping experience for those attending local events or exploring the region. The park is characterized by its open layout and proximity to urban conveniences, making it an efficient choice for a stay in Sioux Falls.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the western side of Sioux Falls, the campground offers excellent proximity to major highways, specifically Interstate 29. The surroundings are largely paved and developed, reflecting its position within a major event complex. Travelers will appreciate being just minutes away from the Denny Sanford Premier Center, making it an ideal spot for concert-goers or sports fans. Despite its urban setting, the area remains relatively organized and manageable for large rigs navigating city streets.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides essential services designed to make your stay comfortable and hassle-free. Most sites offer full hookup options including water, sewer, and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. The sites are primarily gravel and can accommodate various rig sizes, including big-rig friendly pull-throughs. On-site facilities include:
- Clean restrooms and shower facilities
- A convenient dump station
- Pet-friendly designated areas
While the park skips the luxury resort amenities, it excels at providing the core necessities for a functional road trip stop.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
A short drive from the fairgrounds leads visitors to the iconic Falls Park, where the Big Sioux River tumbles over ancient pink quartzite rock formations. Families often enjoy the nearby Great Plains Zoo or the Butterfly House & Aquarium, which are located just a few miles away. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Big Sioux Recreation Trail offers miles of paved paths for biking and walking that loop through the city. The historic downtown district also provides a vibrant selection of local boutiques and diverse dining options.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is perfect for event-driven travelers who want to be near the heart of the action in Sioux Falls. It is an excellent choice for those seeking a convenient stopover while traversing the I-29 or I-90 corridors. If you prioritize easy highway access, proximity to city attractions, and the ability to secure a full hookup site near the urban center, this location fits your travel style. It functions as a reliable home base for explorers and transit travelers rather than a destination resort.

Everything here is old and looks like a dump. No attention to detail or care to modernize. Its too small and underwhelming for a city this size. Th parking lot surface is atrocious. I wish some exciting updates and revamped could happen here to help it thrive. Many things are like this in Sioux Falls. Let's take it up a notch!

RTC is an experience you have to have in life! Yes the crowd was massive but the feeling of so many patriotic people in one place was thrilling. Kid Rock and Nickelback were amazing! The poor flip tails were amazing even being intruded on by all the humans.

Attended rock the country and had a good time. Need to improve the traffic and organize flow of large crowds better though. Not good accommodations for handicapped either.

Haven’t been for the fair yet but this is our second event here in the last month and the grounds are a great place for any large scale event. We were taking part in the Sioux Falls Fireworks show on July 4th and we covered the Rock the Country Music Fest July 18/19
