Walker's Point Recreation Area
Overview
Walker’s Point Recreation Area offers a peaceful escape on the northern shores of Lake Madison. This South Dakota state park is a hidden gem for travelers seeking a quieter alternative to busier regional destinations. The park is characterized by its well-maintained grounds and immediate access to the water, making it a primary choice for those who prioritize nature and relaxation. For many travelers, it serves as a quiet lakeside retreat that provides a classic Midwestern camping experience centered around the beauty of the glacial lakes region.
Location & Surroundings
Located just south of the city of Madison, the park sits within a landscape of rolling hills and fertile farmland. Its position on a prominent peninsula provides stunning views of the 2,800-acre lake. The surrounding area is relatively flat, making it easy to navigate larger rigs. The park’s proximity to Lake Madison ensures that visitors are never more than a short walk from the shoreline, where the sounds of the water create a tranquil backdrop for any RV adventure.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features dozens of electric campsites that cater to modern RV needs. While the sites offer a mix of shade and open sun, they are all designed for easy access to the central facilities. Travelers have access to modern comfort stations equipped with showers and flush toilets, ensuring a comfortable stay. Additional features include a large playground for children, a convenient dump station for RVers, and a well-maintained boat ramp that serves as the hub for all aquatic activities.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water sports are the main draw here, with opportunities for boating, kayaking, and jet skiing. Anglers frequently visit to catch walleye, northern pike, and yellow perch from the fishing dock or by boat. For those looking to explore further, Lake Herman State Park is located nearby, offering additional hiking trails and historical sites. The nearby town of Madison provides convenient access to local groceries, dining, and the campus of Dakota State University, blending rural charm with modern necessities.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for fishing enthusiasts and boaters who want direct access to one of the region’s best lakes. It is also a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe, contained environment where kids can play near the water. Because of its manageable size and quiet atmosphere, it is particularly suited for RVers seeking serenity rather than the high-energy environment of a commercial resort. If you value a scenic lakeside sunset and a calm evening by the fire, this is the perfect South Dakota stop.

A great state park. Well maintained as usual for SD parks and a nice lake

The campground is fairly full on the weekends and quiet during the week. Water sports of all kinds are allowed. There is fishing, but nearby lakes are better. There is a boat launch and fish cleaning station.

Beautiful place to camp! Right on the water and many spots are shaded. Unfortunately we went late June and there was a really bad blue/green algae outbreak. So swimming and fishing were out. Would like to try sometime when there is not an algae bloom.

Love it here, buuut....this years workers/campground hosts are too noisy..traveling up and down the road all day with golf carts and 4x4's. Missing the peaceful.place it was last year.

We stumbled upon this site in a frenzy to reserve something for the 4th of July weekend, as it was the only open tent spot around. It was SO PERFECT! Very spacious, right by the water, quiet, and right in the corner, not too close to our neighbors. VERY happy that we got this spot, and we'll definitely be coming back. Quiet hours at the campground are from 11PM - 6AM and they were followed very well, even on a holiday weekend. The campground also had a great amount of activities for families on the holiday weekend.
