Wapocoma Campground
Overview
Wapocoma Campground serves as a peaceful retreat nestled deep in the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia. Located just outside the historic town of Romney, this park offers a scenic escape along the banks of the South Branch of the Potomac River. It provides a traditional camping atmosphere where the natural beauty of the Appalachian landscape takes center stage, offering a quiet respite from the hustle of modern life for every traveler.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated in a fertile valley surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests. Its most defining feature is its extensive river frontage, providing guests with easy access to the clear waters of the South Branch. The surrounding area is characterized by the quiet charm of Hampshire County, where the pace of life slows down significantly, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing mountain getaway surrounded by local wildlife and lush greenery.
Amenities & Park Features
Visitors will find functional facilities designed to support a comfortable and convenient stay. The park features a variety of campsites with water and electric hookups, along with a centrally located dump station for RV travelers. Guests often utilize the private boat ramp to launch canoes, tubes, or kayaks directly into the river. Other amenities include a playground for children and clean bathhouse facilities that are easily accessible from most campsites throughout the grounds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
One of the most unique aspects of staying here is watching the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad pass through the valley. Anglers frequently visit to take advantage of the excellent smallmouth bass fishing found in the South Branch. Beyond the water, the historic streets of Romney offer a glimpse into the past with local boutiques and colonial-era architecture. Travelers can also explore the Trough, a nearby canyon famous for its high concentration of American bald eagles.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize river access and natural scenery over high-end resort luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for families wanting to unplug and spend quality time around a campfire. Additionally, it is a prime location for birdwatchers and train enthusiasts who want to see bald eagles soaring above or vintage locomotives chugging through a stunning wilderness setting in the heart of West Virginia.

Perfect for our overnight while visiting Romney, staff was fantastic! Views & river are lovely and quiet. Roads inside the park are gravel, hopefully they’ll consider paving them at some point. Note-if arriving from the south, stay on major roads, Trough Road is very winding & very narrow, unsafe for rv’s.

Campground is in a beautiful location, property is well maintained, the staff is friendly and facilities are well taken care of.....except the bathhouse. It's gross, only 3 working toilets for the 100's of campers, no fans other then a box fan in the corner and no a/c, it was so hot in there you could bearly breath not to mention the smell.

Growing up in the 90s to early 2000s I loved going to Wapacoma campgrounds to camp. We used tents and we had a blast each time we went. An then I went from 2005-2014 without going there and then I got a job working for DirecTV and had came here to install satellites for DTV costumers to be able to bring their boxes an hook them up to have tv. Then my family camped here over the weekend and everything still seems pretty great my only complaint is that there should be a time frame to allow the use of golf carts and have a time at like 9 or 10pm where you cant ride them cause it was a lot of traffic and was keeping tent campers up. And my only other complaint is that there are so many RVs jam-packed into the surrounding areas of the tent spots. I get the grounds need to make as much money as possible but that's a little much. An my last and smallest complaint is that visitors shouldn't have to pay anything. Why should they have to pay when they aren't staying? Other than that being there brought back a lot of great memories from my childhood. An I would recommend this to others.

I have never camped her before and was unsure what to expect. The staff are very hospitable and the campground was super quiet. Loved it!

Checking in after having the reservations for months was nothing like I expected! They took our money and there were no instructions no guidance. This place has over 200 sites and signs were marked poorly. I think more then 3/4 of the park were full timers. Or long time weekenders. I felt like we were crashing a family reunion. Would not recommend
