Wasatch/Mirror Lake Campground

Overview

Mirror Lake Campground provides a quintessential high-altitude escape within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Perched at an elevation of 10,400 feet, this destination is legendary among Utah locals for its breathtaking mountain vistas and refreshing summer temperatures. It offers a primitive camping experience that encourages visitors to slow down and immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the High Uintas, far away from the noise of urban life. It is the most iconic stopping point along the scenic corridor.

Location & Surroundings

Located approximately 31 miles from Kamas along the scenic Mirror Lake Highway, the campground is nestled against the shore of its namesake lake. The area is defined by dense subalpine forests and dramatic rocky peaks that stay snow-capped well into the spring. Because of the heavy winter snowpack, the location is usually only accessible from early summer through late fall. The Mirror Lake Highway itself is a designated scenic byway, offering travelers a stunning drive through some of the highest peaks in the state.

Amenities & Park Features

Facilities at this site are designed to maintain a natural feel, offering vault toilets and drinking water during the peak summer season. It is important to note that there are no hookups or dump stations available on-site, making it a true dry-camping experience. The campground features several convenient assets for travelers:

  • Individual fire rings and picnic tables provided at every campsite.
  • Easy access to a paved boat ramp for kayaks and non-motorized watercraft.
  • Spaced-out campsites that provide a sense of privacy among the lodgepole pines.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The lake is a haven for trout fishing and paddling, with its crystal-clear waters perfectly reflecting the surrounding mountain landscape. Hikers can easily access the Bald Mountain Trail, which offers a challenging ascent with rewarding 360-degree views of the wilderness area. Other nearby highlights include the High Uintas Wilderness boundary and numerous smaller glacial lakes, making this an excellent base camp for those who love alpine exploration and wildlife viewing in a pristine environment.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a paradise for adventurous RVers who prefer a rustic, authentic atmosphere over a traditional resort-style stay. It is ideal for those with smaller trailers, truck campers, or camper vans who are prepared for off-grid living without modern luxuries like electricity or Wi-Fi. If your travel style involves waking up to crisp mountain air and having world-class hiking trails right at your doorstep, this high-country retreat is a perfect match.

Nice campground, but it would be nice to have running water for $31/night. They have vault toilets (no lights in the bathrooms), a water spigot (nowhere to wash dirty dishes), and there is a dumpster (no bear boxes). The campsites are fine and most of them will fit a second vehicle, although you pay an extra $10 to have a second vehicle parked at your site. This is a dog friendly campground; dogs are supposed to be on 6' leash, according to the website.

Been coming here for years :) many many childhood memories made here! Sites are always well kept and clean. Bathrooms are well spaced, and if you follow the guidelines set, they don't smell too badly. The path around the lake is well defined, but not exactly stoller friendly due to roots and rocks so keep that in mind when it comes to littles. Absolutely gorgeous up there. The hosts have always been friendly, and well informed.

Pam was the camp host and basically saved me. The altitude gave me some serious chest pain, and Pam helped nurse me back to full working order. The campground was very clean because Pam and her helper raked the ground, cleaned the fire pit, and removed all debris. It was truly pristine! She checked on me every day and I was so grateful because I was camping alone. The bathrooms were well vented and clean. And overall the place was beautiful, which is a miracle given the amount of people that traffic that area every day. With all her hard work I don’t understand how people don’t tip her cash for each day they spend, like you would a housekeeper. She works so hard. She should be given at LEAST $5 per person in your group, per day. She does way more than a housekeeper and she does it all with very limited help. Thank you so much Pam, for my beautiful, peaceful, safe, and divine stay! I am forever grateful and hope I can return VERY soon!

It was so peaceful and calm. We enjoyed the beautiful lake, the fishing was decent. It got a little cold, but was still enjoyable to be up in the mountains and see all the beauty. The stars were amazing. Kids of all ages can enjoy.

Absolutely beautiful place to take pictures or camp. We went to see the fall leaves and used one of the picnic sites to cook a quick dinner at. Loved that they had a fire pit there as well.

We stayed at the Mirror Lake Campground last weekend and not only was the camp site meticulously clean, the hosts were amazing. Penny and Paul made our trip SO much better. Friendly, kind, very knowledgeable about the area, overall they were amazing hosts. We had so much fun talking to them, and learning about the site, the area, their lives, and they were genuinely interested in us. It was a change of pace as usually camp hosts are all business and not very personable. Penny and Paul were very professional, but made us feel like if there was any issues, they would help us in any way they could. Overall happy with the camp site, and very pleased with the camp hosts. Made it feel like an actual vacation.

Our family enjoyed a weekend stay at the Mirror Lake Campground during mid-September. The sites were meticulously maintained & the scenery is beautiful. Easily fit our 39ft fifth-wheel and truck set up. Each site is equipped with its own picnic table & firepit. Close walking distance to the lake where we were able to use our kayaks. Paul & Penney were extremely friendly and interacted with us on several occasions. Would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone interested in camping in the high Uintas!

Mirror Lake is absolutely gorgeous. The fishing is phenomenal from the shore or canoe....best early morning and dusk. Kids have a blast here, and there are a ton of camp grounds. **Be sure to book no less than 9 months out though, it is definitely a popular spot. Best weather through June and beginning of August... reaching about August 19th the weather seems to really change. Great place for scenery, hiking, fishing, canoeing, paddle boards, camping and hammocks.

This campground has been a great location for our family camping excursions for years! Camp Hosts, Penney & Paul Wells are the best campground hosts that we have ever known! They have kept the campground safe, clean and friendly for years! Our family is extremely grateful for their service and this wonderful place! We have been able to camp in tents or RVs, with elderly and infant family easily. Wonderful clean water, toilets, and even firewood is available if needed. The lake is beautiful and the trail around it is easy enough for a toddler to manage! Yet there are more strenuous hiking trails right there too! And we have often caught the trout for dinner at Mirror Lake too! The wildlife is nearby and fun to see and THE WILDFLOWERS! Even at end of summer, the flowers are everywhere! Again, this is a sign of the care that has been taken to keep Mirror Lake Campground one of the BEST in the United States!
