Washington Park

Overview

Washington Park is a 220-acre coastal treasure situated on the western tip of Fidalgo Island. This city-managed park offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest camping experience, combining dense evergreen forests with dramatic rocky shorelines. Visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands and the Olympic Mountains, making it a peaceful retreat for those who appreciate natural beauty and a well-maintained environment over commercial resort luxury.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the charming maritime city of Anacortes, Washington, the park serves as a gateway to the Salish Sea. It is conveniently positioned adjacent to the Washington State Ferry terminal, yet remains buffered by thick forest that maintains a quiet, secluded atmosphere. The park peninsula is surrounded by the Rosario Strait, providing visitors with sweeping vistas and easy access to saltwater beaches that define the region's rugged and scenic coastline.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Washington Park provides 68 total sites designed for an immersive outdoor experience. Park amenities include:

  • 41 sites with water and electricity (30-amp service) for RVs
  • A central on-site dump station and potable water access
  • Clean restrooms and coin-operated showers
  • A high-quality boat launch with trailer parking

The sites are predominantly back-in and vary in size, set against a backdrop of towering fir and cedar trees that provide natural privacy. While the park lacks individual sewer hookups, the well-maintained facilities cater effectively to self-contained travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The highlight of the park is the 2.2-mile scenic loop road, which is frequently closed to vehicle traffic to allow for peaceful hiking and biking. Just a short drive away, the historic downtown district of Anacortes offers local breweries, seafood restaurants, and boutique shopping. For further adventure, travelers can visit Deception Pass State Park or take the nearby ferry for a day trip to Friday Harbor or Orcas Island for whale watching.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for nature-oriented RVers who prefer a rustic, scenic environment over a paved parking lot. Because the campsites and access roads are nestled within a mature forest, it is best suited for smaller trailers and camper vans rather than exceptionally large, multi-slide rigs. It is also a perfect staging point for travelers planning an early morning ferry departure or for boaters looking for immediate access to the sound.

Beautiful park with stunning views. We really enjoyed the natural beauty of the area gorgeous scenery and a peaceful setting. The grounds are well-maintained, and the abundance of trash cans throughout the park makes it easy to keep things clean and accessible. It’s clear that a lot of care goes into maintaining the outdoor spaces, and we appreciated how tidy everything was. That said, signage could be improved—especially around Loop C. From the road, all you see is the exit sign pointing left, and it looks like going right would take you directly through someone’s campsite. We ended up looping around before realizing that the “campsite path” was actually the road to the rest of the campground. For first-time visitors, the lack of clear directional signage was a bit frustrating. Unfortunately, the women’s restroom facilities really need attention. We stayed for four nights, and it didn’t appear they were cleaned at all during that time. Trash bins were full, soap dispensers were empty for over 24 hours, and the showers were in rough shape, one wouldn’t drain, and overall cleanliness was poor. The staff was responsive when we called for firewood, and we appreciated how prompt they were. I just wish that same level of attentiveness was applied to the restrooms and shower

Gorgeous views! Beautiful scenery and trees! Shaded campsites! Lovely hiking trails. Unfortunately, the bathrooms were often dirty. Only one shower was working in the women’s restroom in the campground. When someone showered the entire bathroom floor became wet.

Great place to watch the sunset! Photos are near the park entrance. There are pavilions with huge BBQ grills that can be rented for big parties. There’s also a playground for kids. It has a 2 mile loop that you can either hike or drive around! No excuse for enjoying nature! Parking plenty and entrance is free!

A fantastic walk in a beautiful area. My first time visiting Anacortes and stumbled upon this area when I had some time to kill. Its a little over 2 miles going in a loop with a ton of spots off the beaten path for site seeing. The main path is paved, but be on the lookout for cars as they can drive on it and you'll have to move off the path. Aside from that though, it was a fantastic experience!

Nice paved path but something to note is cars are allowed to take the path also, in one direction only. (Counterclockwise) I took advice from All Trails and walked clockwise so I could see the incoming traffic. Helpful as my dog was with me. Enjoyable day.
