Waterloo SRA/Sugarloaf

Overview

Waterloo State Recreation Area stands as the largest park in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, encompassing more than 20,000 acres of protected land. At the heart of this expansive wilderness is the Sugarloaf Lake Campground, a favored destination for RV travelers who appreciate a blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. This park offers a quintessential Michigan camping experience, emphasizing quiet nights and the preservation of the state's diverse ecosystem. It provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to swap city noise for the sounds of wind through the trees and waves hitting the shore.

Location & Surroundings

Positioned near the historic town of Chelsea, MI, the park showcases a unique landscape shaped by prehistoric glacial activity. RVers will navigate through a terrain of rolling hills, kettles, and moraines that offer a different perspective than the flat plains found elsewhere in the region. The campground is nestled along the shores of Sugarloaf Lake, providing guests with immediate access to tranquil waters and lush forest canopies. The proximity to both Ann Arbor and Jackson makes it an accessible getaway while feeling entirely secluded in nature.

Amenities & Park Features

The Sugarloaf Lake unit is designed to support a comfortable stay, offering 150+ modern campsites with electrical hookups suitable for most rigs. The park includes essential infrastructure to ensure a smooth trip for motorhomes and trailers alike.

  • Electrical hookups are available at the majority of sites to power your RV.
  • A dedicated swimming beach and boat launch provide easy lake access.
  • Modern restrooms with hot showers and a central dump station are on-site.

Beyond these basics, the facility features fresh water fill-up stations and a playground, ensuring that families have everything they need for a multi-day stay without having to leave the recreation area.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

There is no shortage of activity for those who love the great outdoors. The Waterloo-Pinckney Trail provides over 30 miles of hiking opportunities, while the nearby Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center offers educational exhibits on the area's fascinating natural history. For those seeking thrills on two wheels, the DTE Energy Foundation Trail is a nationally recognized mountain biking system located within the recreation area. Additionally, the nearby town of Chelsea offers a charming downtown area with local shops and the famous Purple Rose Theatre.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is perfectly suited for nature-focused travelers who want to immerse themselves in Michigan's wild spaces. It is an excellent choice for families and groups looking for a traditional lakeside retreat with plenty of room for kids to explore. Whether you are a bird watcher hoping to spot a Sandhill Crane or a mountain biker seeking rugged terrain, this park serves as an ideal outdoor basecamp for your next RV adventure in the Great Lakes State.

A new happy place. MTB trails are some of the best. Hiking the Waterloo Pinkney trail was gorgeous. Great camping, near Chelsea. I'll be back a few times a year.

We came just after the season ended, so the beach was closed and the picnic tables were stored at the Portage Lake area, but the nature was gorgeous, everything but the (privately owned) vending machines was well maintained. We're definitely planning a return trip! The disc golf course could use a bit of variety though. Every hole is a tunnel through the forest with a dogleg to the basket, the only differences being the width of the tunnel and the severity and direction of the dogleg.

We camped at Sugarloaf Lake Modern Campground. Great campsites. I didn't catch any BIG fish but had a blast catching more little blue gills than I could count.

My wife and I have been camping here for years. The spots are either grassy or paved. They have some pull through, but most are back in. The beach is amazing. The bathrooms were clean. The office has firewood, and ice for sale. The workers are friendly and helpful. Would like to mention the Host Blake did an amazing job! Definitely stop by and see! Very close to my home.

Very nice with 2 camping areas. Open year round but only on weekends in winter. Beauty trail system and nice sand beach on a fully recreation lake. Boat slip and canoes available. Bathrooms and showers top notch. Check out the site but you can't go wrong staying here.

Waterloo Recreation Area is a hidden gem for anyone who loves the outdoors! With miles of scenic trails, peaceful lakes, and beautiful forests, it’s perfect for hiking, biking, camping, or just escaping into nature for a while. I especially loved the trails around Green Lake—great views and very well-maintained. The area is massive, so there’s always something new to explore, from quiet picnic spots to challenging hikes. Great for families, solo adventurers, or a relaxing weekend getaway. Highly recommend bringing bug spray and checking the maps ahead of time—it’s easy to get pleasantly lost!

Went here specifically to see the Black Spruce Kettle Bog - It is magical! We're outdoorsy folk, and are considering another trip (from Indiana) when we can see different plants and critters, later in the season. One tip: Use the EDDY DISCOVERY CENTER ADDRESS to find it!

Great little fishing pier, water is kind of shallow and water was still super cold, didn't get any bites!

Lovely campground although the sites are not the most level. The lake is beautiful, the play area for the kids is great, and the boat launch is nice and has ample parking.
