Wayne/Oak Hill

Overview

Tucked into the lush greenery of the Wayne National Forest, the Oak Hill Campground near Pedro, Ohio, offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. As part of the Ironton Ranger District, this facility serves as a primary gateway to the scenic Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area. Travelers can expect a quiet, well-maintained environment where the focus is on the sounds of the forest rather than the hum of a highway. It is an authentic woodland destination that captures the rugged beauty of Southern Ohio.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated in the rolling Appalachian foothills, providing a landscape defined by steep ridges and deep hollows. Surrounded by dense hardwood forests, the site provides ample shade and a sense of deep seclusion. Its location near Pedro makes it easy to reach while remaining far enough from major metropolitan centers to offer a true escape. The nearby Lake Vesuvius, a 143-acre reservoir, provides a stunning focal point for the area, reflecting the seasonal changes of the surrounding oak and hickory trees.

Amenities & Park Features

Oak Hill provides a comfortable bridge between primitive camping and modern convenience. Many of the sites are equipped with electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes with paved or graveled parking pads. While the park maintains a rustic atmosphere, visitors have access to essential facilities including vault toilets and communal water hydrants. Each site features a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, making it easy to enjoy traditional campfire cooking while listening to the local wildlife under a clear, dark sky.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor adventure is the primary draw here, with over 60 miles of trails accessible within the immediate recreation area. Visitors can spend their days fishing for bass and bluegill or launching a kayak from the boat ramp to explore the lake’s quiet coves. The Rock House Trail is a local favorite, known for its impressive rock overhangs and cliff faces. For history buffs, the historic Vesuvius Iron Furnace stands as a monument to the region's 19th-century industrial heritage and is easily accessible for a quick afternoon tour.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and avid hikers who prioritize immediate trail access over commercial resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking a traditional camping experience focused on outdoor education and wildlife spotting. Because of its serene environment and lack of through-traffic, it also appeals to boondock-style travelers who appreciate the added luxury of electricity. If you enjoy the quiet simplicity of a National Forest setting, Wayne/Oak Hill is a perfect fit for your next journey.

Well updated review. Still a very nice campground. We got a new camper and.it 36ft total length. Fits great on 18, which is now our go to site. Lobe the host and volunteers. They really keep the place clean. Great hiking and boating.

Overall we absolutely love this Campground. There is 1 downside. There is only 1 Hot Shower on Post Oak that works nicely. There is 1 Hot Shower in one other restroom, but it floods for some reason. The other 2 showers on that loop are Super Cold. When the Campground is full the Hot shower restroom becomes an issue. Please fix them if possible. Thank you. We love watching all of the wildlife here. All of the hosts are very nice and helpful.

Great campground. We did one night in site 6. Spots are a big close together and open. If you’re looking for secluded spots this is not your campground. Facilities are nice and clean. Spots are easy to get in and out of.

Wonderful Park! Wonderful Trails especially the lake perimeter Trail lots of rock formations and cliffs, they say the lake trail is 7.7 miles however that is not correct. Be prepared to get wet feet on the 5th mile on the extreme end of the lake. Its not an easy trail especially for kids. Well maintained but lots of wet areas. Great place to kayak and they have kayak rentals. Campgrounds are beautiful and have amazing facilities!

Relatively new infrastructure. Large established trees that give good shade, but far enough apart so grass grows. Most of the camping spots are "level enough" and reasonably well spaced and large. Some of the spots are awkwardly set up with picnic tables and fire pits on the back side of the camper, but the large size of the spots makes it feel ok. the restrooms are clean and functional. The lake is electric motors only, and makes for nice canoeing with nature.

Very clean campgrounds and bathroom however no running water is a drawback. I was told they are working on it. Once water is available here I'd say it's perfect place to go with the family.

Been camping here every season for most of my life. Water and electric at all sites with two shower houses. Camp hosts over years have always been very helpful and friendly. USFS folks have always been more than accommodating and helpful. Plenty of hiking trails. Great campground.

This campground/area is sooo beautiful! I love the boardwalk! The campground is quiet and peaceful. We have stayed twice now and will be going back. My only complaint is the difference in the shower/restrooms. The showers in the back are very well kept and always clean. It is very obvious someone takes pride in their work. The front showers were not so clean. The same used bandaid laid on the floor from Friday until we left on Monday. The floors were filthy. There were spots of mildew starting in the shower. Toothpaste was all over the sink and mirror. I know that campers should clean up after themselves but not all of them do. I would think with 3-4 camphost in one campground that they'd be able to clean the shower/restroom at least once a day. It is definitely worth driving to the back for a shower. All in all, this may be my favorite campground in southern Ohio! Love it!!!!

Beautiful and peaceful at this federal campground. Half price for seniors with lifetime passes so really cheap with water and electric. Bath houses close by and kept very clean. Sites are pretty good size and it gets packed with families on the weekends. During the week there were just 2 of us camping on this loop. There's a big beach picnic park too for a small fee for access. Walking and hiking trails too. We stayed 11 nights and found lots of places to eat and drink in local cities. People are very friendly too.
