The park is characterized by its mature trees and well-spaced campsites, providing a sense of privacy and tranquility for every visitor during their stay.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 35 miles east of Pierre, the park sits on a unique sub-peninsula created by a sharp bend in the river. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling prairie hills and expansive water views that define the Missouri River reservoir system. The campground provides a variety of electric hookups catering to various RV sizes, including many sites with 50-amp service. On-site facilities include modern showers, flush toilets, and a convenient dump station for self-contained travelers. Water enthusiasts benefit from multiple boat ramps and a dedicated fish cleaning station, making it easy to process the day's catch. Families will appreciate the playground and picnic shelters, while the lush grass and shaded areas offer a comfortable environment for outdoor relaxation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers flock here for the world-class walleye and smallmouth bass fishing available on Lake Sharpe. Beyond the water, the area is a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, with frequent sightings of bald eagles and deer. A short drive into Pierre allows visitors to explore the South Dakota State Capitol and various local museums. For those who enjoy active recreation, the park features an archery range and several walking paths that provide excellent views of the river's unique geography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for boaters and fishing enthusiasts who want easy access to the water and reliable shore power. It also appeals to families seeking a safe, quiet environment where children can play and explore the outdoors. If you prefer a natural, low-key setting over a high-traffic resort, West Bend Recreation Area is a perfect fit. It is particularly well-suited for travelers on a cross-state journey looking for a scenic multi-day stopover in the Great Plains.

I’ve had bad experiences here with park rangers which are so unreasonable. I picked up my kids from the beach with my pickup truck. Had them sit in the bed of the truck and I was holding my 3yo son while driving 5mph around the campground to my campsite. Nice and easy. Got to my campsite and a young ranger showed up thinking he owns the world. He asked why I would drive around public roads like that! Told me I have to have my son buckled up in baby seat as these are public roads. I was respectful and appreciate authorities but that seemed out of line to me.

Beautiful campground on the lake. Very clean bathrooms with the best showers we had while RVing across the country. We went out on the lake with a fishing guide, caught several fish, they fillet them right there on the campground and we ate them for dinner. There is also a beach to play on and a fishing dock. Definitely recommend

We are currently staying The Outpost Lodge, and fishing at West Bend Recreations. The Outpost Lodge is the best lodge is South Dakota and we love to catch giant walleyes and small mouth bass. They even cook our walleye at The Outpost Lodge!

Stopped in on a roadtrip for an overnight. Really awesome campsite with nice staff! There was a water leak issue while we were there, but we were informed upon arrival and given options to make sure we had accessibility to water. I appreciated their care and dedication.

The West Bend recreation area is a beautiful location located along the Missouri River. There is a great boat dock area with easy access andlots of parking available. There are numerous campsites around the grounds with some right along the river, including 4 cabins available to rent. Lots of trees to offer shade. There is a nice playground for kids, swimming area on the river, restrooms throughout the grounds, fish cleaning station. Very well maintained grounds. Exceptional place to access the river, camp, or just spend the day recreating.
