Whispering Elms Motel/RV Park & Tent Camping

Overview

Whispering Elms Motel/RV Park & Tent Camping serves as a welcoming gateway for travelers exploring the rugged beauty of Eastern Nevada. Located in the quiet town of Baker, this park offers an unpretentious, rustic atmosphere that prioritizes convenience and access to the Great Basin wilderness. Whether you are staying in one of the motel rooms or parking a large rig, the park provides a reliable home base for nature lovers looking to experience high desert landscapes and towering mountain peaks.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just minutes from the entrance of a major national park, the property is surrounded by wide-open vistas and the dramatic Snake Range. The environment is characterized by sweeping desert views and some of the clearest night skies in the lower 48 states. Baker is a small, remote community, meaning guests can enjoy a peaceful stay away from the noise of major highways, though it is important to arrive prepared as services in this remote high-altitude region are charmingly limited.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides essential services to ensure a comfortable stay, including full hookup RV sites with 30 and 50-amp electrical service available. For those traveling without a rig, there are clean motel units and a dedicated area for traditional tent camping. One of the most unique features of the property is the on-site bar and lounge, which serves as a social hub for both locals and travelers. The park also includes essential restroom and shower facilities for guest use after a day of exploration.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is undeniably Great Basin National Park, where you can tour the intricate Lehman Caves or drive the scenic road to the base of Wheeler Peak. Hikers often seek out the ancient Bristlecone Pine groves or attempt to summit the 13,063-foot peak for panoramic views. Because the area is a designated International Dark Sky Park, stargazing is a premier activity here. Additionally, the nearby Border Inn offers a glimpse into local life on the Nevada-Utah line.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for adventure-seeking RVers who prioritize proximity to natural wonders over resort-style luxuries. It is a perfect fit for amateur astronomers and photographers looking to capture the Milky Way, as well as road trippers crossing Nevada on the Loneliest Road in America. If you appreciate a simple, quiet basecamp with easy access to world-class hiking and geological wonders, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

DO NOT STAY HERE! The rooms are nice enough and updated, but the heating system not only failed but the manager refused to let us control the temperature, preferring to program it themselves, since “people change the settings”. Really? Isn’t that what you’re supposed to be able to do? The manager was accusatory, saying we had done something to shut the whole system down, when we had no control over it in the first place. He was rude, disrespectful, and completely unhelpful. Good thing we had a space heater with us.

I recently stayed at the newly renovated motel and wow! They did a phenomenal job making these rooms beautiful, comfortable, and functional. The room had everything you would need and most importantly, it was exceptionally clean and the bed was super comfy. The staff was very friendly and pleasant to chat with. Despite being one of the only places to stay in the area, they have really put in the effort to make your stay wonderful.

We stayed at the RV park and it was great. The spaces are quite roomy and, unlike most desert RV parks, there was shade! Showers were clean and free. Laundry room was spotless and reasonably priced...$2 for the washer, $2 for the dryer with no additional time needed to get the clothes dry. (I had both sweatshirts and jeans that dried completely!) Machines take onlqqy quarters (no cards) and there is no dollar bill changer so make sure you take your own quarters. I am giving this place 5 stars not because it's a plush, over-priced RV park, but because it's not. It provided everything we needed for a very reasonable price, was clean and quiet and we left feeling refreshed and happy. We will definitely stay here next time we're in the area and need to become human again.

We stayed at the RV park while visiting Great Basin National Park. It is very close to both visitor centers. Baker is a VERY small town, and this is the best RV park there. Although it isn’t the fanciest RV park we’ve been to, it was adequate and met our needs. Our site was large and all hook-ups worked well. The dirt roads/sites can be a bit dusty, but not enough to ruin our stay. We arrive earlier than our check-in time and they were very accommodating and friendly. We didn’t have any issues and our stay was good.

We stayed at the RV park for 3 nights in early May. All of the staff were friendly and accommodating. Loved the food truck, Chuck makes a great burger. Loved the atmosphere of the bar and visiting with other guests. Don't let the outside of the motel fool you, the rooms have been renovated and are very nice and when we were there they were working on the landscaping around the motel. The laundry facilities were very clean (had a lot of bad laundry facilities at other campgrounds). Great location for Great Basin NP. Very dog friendly and by the time we left everyone knew Tucker and was saying good bye to him. Would definitely stay there again if we are in the area.

I just finished a transcontinental bikeride (San-Francisco-New York) and looking back the Whispering Elms was one of the best campsites i stayed at. There’s a foodtruck and a bar on site, the owners are very friendly and accommodating, as our the other guests, there’s a great atmosphere and the price was very reasonable.

Very nice RV campgrounds, well maintained and easy level sight access for larger RVs. Has Great Basin National Park right next door. Very well managed, and helpful service. Would strongly recommend and would return.

We stayed at Whispering Elms in March on our way from Tahoe to Bryce Canyon National Park. We arrived late (10.30pm) and the lady was so nice, room was unlocked, heat was on and I can't rave enough about what this service meant especially when traveling with a child on a long road trip. The amenities in the room were great, room is cosy, clean, newly renovated and if you want to hike Great Basin (we didn't on this trip but have before) its the perfect location for this wonderful National Park.

Location is very close to Lehman caves. Downside is that there’s not much to do or see - at least in early March. The road to the Bristlecone forest was closed. Our unit, number six was recently remodeled and has really cute little touches. Downside, however, is that the prices are significantly more expensive than other motels in the area. Otherwise, the bed was comfortable foam mattress, thick towels, and nicely decorated.

It's been a while since I've been about a year, here but, I genuinely think about how much of a dump this place was. Toilets were not cleaned at all, felt like a it hadn't been clean in half a decade. Guy runs a whole monopoly over the town and he shut down a competitor, which by the way had a far better maintained property and actually looked great unlike how it feels to stay in this place in a trailer. It's like living in a run down car dump while the owner are complete tweakers, I hope this place shuts down.
