Whispering Pines Campground

Overview

Whispering Pines Campground offers a peaceful retreat nestled within the scenic Black Hills National Forest. Unlike the more crowded city parks, this destination provides a classic camping experience surrounded by mature ponderosa pine trees. The atmosphere is quiet and rustic, making it an ideal choice for travelers who want to escape the summer heat and enjoy the crisp mountain air while remaining close to the region's most famous landmarks. The park emphasizes a natural connection to the South Dakota landscape while providing the essential comforts required for a modern road trip.

Location & Surroundings

Conveniently located northwest of Rapid City along Highway 385, the campground serves as a central hub for exploring Western South Dakota. The surrounding landscape features rugged granite formations and dense woodlands typical of the high country. Its elevated location ensures cooler temperatures than the plains below, offering a refreshing environment for outdoor activities and relaxing evening campfires under a dark, starry sky. The drive to the park is easily navigable for larger rigs, providing a scenic mountain backdrop without being too far from city services.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering spacious RV sites with full hookups as well as cozy camping cabins for those traveling without a rig. Guests can cool off in the heated outdoor swimming pool or browse the selection of gifts and essentials at the on-site general store. Key features include:

  • Clean laundry facilities and high-speed Wi-Fi access
  • A dedicated playground and pet-friendly walking areas
  • On-site propane and firewood sales for nightly campfires

These facilities provide a comfortable and functional stay for families and solo travelers alike, ensuring all basic needs are met within the park grounds.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors are perfectly positioned to reach the region's most famous landmarks within a short drive. The iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the massive Crazy Horse Memorial are just down the road. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the close proximity to Sheridan Lake for fishing and boating, while the historic mining towns of Deadwood and Sturgis offer unique dining and entertainment experiences just a scenic drive away. The nearby Mickelson Trail also provides miles of hiking and biking opportunities through the heart of the mountains.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a perfect fit for families and nature lovers who prefer a natural, wooded setting over a paved urban resort. It is best for those seeking a centrally located basecamp that allows them to explore the entire Black Hills region from one convenient spot. Travelers who value shade and a quiet atmosphere will find this park to be one of the more serene options in the Rapid City area. Whether you are a history buff visiting memorials or a hiker looking for forest trails, this park offers a balanced and relaxing environment.

This is our type of campground. Everything you need and nothing you don't. Small camp store, firewood, laundry, and pool. Fairly level and long sites with full hookups. Harley, Lisa, and Paula took great care to make sure our large group enjoyed our stay. When a hailstorm with baseball size hail came thru the campground, Harley did whatever he could to help all of us campers get our rigs weather tight and road worthy. He went above and beyond. The location is great. It is just off of US Route 385 but there is almost no road noise at night. Close to Deadwood, Spearfish, and Lead to the north, Custer, Mount Rushmore, and Hot Springs to the south, and Rapid City and Badlands NP to the east. Highly recommended.

We stopped for snacks and to use the restroom. I left my wallet in the restroom and didn’t realize it until I was in Sundance. I called right away and they had it for me. I couldn’t get back over there for a couple days so they kept it in their safe for me! Wonderful people!

I highly recommend that if you need camping in the area, you stay here. The host Lisa and her husband are very awesome and very friendly. They have clean bathrooms and laundry available. There is a heated swimming pool, the kids loved it. It's has a nice little park for kids as well. The hosts recommended a hiking trail that was right around the corner and the views we got from that priceless.

This a my homebase while staying in the Black Hills on my trips here. Away from the hustle and bustle, quiet, serene surroundings. I vacation to restore my soul, and my stays here refill my bucket, give my body and mind the break and renewal that is so needed! Owners/ hosts are great to work with. I thank you for providing this space and peaceful experience! I will be back! And soon!

Small and quiet family owned campground. No privacy really, as there are no trees and sites are right on top of each other. But the staff were so nice and generous. The pool was definitely warm (air temp was about 60 degrees Fahrenheit), unlike some other campgrounds that falsely claim the same. Small and older playground, but my 5 yo enjoyed it, so that’s what counts. The general store was well stocked, and had a pool table. Showers and bathrooms were clean and well maintained. And of course, the proximity to everything the Black Hills has to offer, and to Devil’s Tower, really added to the value! We would definitely stay again some day!
