White Mound (Sauk County Park)

Overview

White Mound County Park offers a peaceful retreat into the rolling hills of Wisconsin's Driftless Area. Centered around a scenic 104-acre lake, this park provides a quiet, nature-focused alternative to the more crowded state parks in the region. It successfully balances modern conveniences with a deep connection to the outdoors, making it a favorite for travelers who appreciate tranquility. The park is exceptionally well-maintained and serves as a year-round destination for those seeking a picturesque landscape and a slower pace of travel.

Location & Surroundings

Located near Hillpoint in Sauk County, the park is defined by the dramatic Driftless Area topography. This unique landscape features steep ridges and limestone outcroppings that were untouched by the last glacial period. The geography provides a stunning backdrop of dense forests and rolling prairies. Because the park is nestled away from major urban centers, visitors can enjoy vibrant seasonal foliage and exceptionally dark night skies, perfect for stargazing from your campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a variety of sites, including many equipped with 50-amp electrical hookups to accommodate modern rigs. Visitors have access to clean, functional facilities that make a multi-day stay comfortable. Key features include:

  • A modern shower building and well-maintained restroom facilities.
  • A convenient dump station and potable water fill for RVers.
  • A swimming beach, fishing piers, and boat rentals at the lake.

The park also features over ten miles of multi-use trails, a large playground for children, and a dedicated horse camping area for those traveling with animals.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area surrounding Hillpoint is filled with unique Wisconsin landmarks. A short drive leads to Natural Bridge State Park, which features the largest natural bridge in the state. Travelers can also explore the architectural wonders of Taliesin in Spring Green, the former home of Frank Lloyd Wright. For those interested in local flavor, the nearby hills are dotted with artisanal cideries and traditional Wisconsin supper clubs that offer a true taste of the region’s hospitality.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for nature-focused RVers who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over a busy commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for anglers and kayakers looking for calm, electric-motor-only waters where they can paddle in peace. If you are a traveler who values privacy, well-marked hiking trails, and the beauty of the rural Midwest, White Mound County Park provides the perfect setting for your next adventure.

We stayed here for 5 nights in October. The park is lovely, the campground clean. The sites are fairly spacious and mostly level. Vault toileta were clean. Showers looked modern, but are coin operated. Dumpsters/trash containers were only at the entrance the campground, and none at the trailheads, but maybe have them in the high season. Nice hiking trails. The beach looked like it would be nice in the summer. Very reasonably priced.

Very nice campground. The site that I had was pretty level. The campground was very quiet at night. Great hiking trails. If I had one complaint it would be that the office was closed the entire weekend. There was no way to rent a kayak or purchase firewood.

Love this place. I grew up at this lake. I learned to swim here. I have ridden on horseback on the trails. I have hiked the trails. This is a beautiful place to come visit whether you want to camp, ride horse trails, hike, or swim, even kayak or paddleboard. The office staff are very friendly and accommodating. There is even an area I believe it's called the Smoking Terrace that you can rent out for events. This is also a smaller lake tucked away that many of the locals know about but doesn't get overcrowded with tourists.

Head directly north of Spring Green or west of Lake Wisconsin and you'll be in Sauk County's White Mound County Park. You will find spacious campsites, most shaded, and a curious combination of amenities. The shower house is paired with pit toilets, the sinks and washer/drier are outdoors (!), there's a helpful administrative office for firewood and boat rentals but no camp store or food/drink service beyond a couple of vending machines. Between campsite and vehicle fees and coin-operated showers, this is not a cheap venue. The trails range from very broad grassy paths for the horse riders to 'unmarked' trails, meaning you may end up bushwhacking. Expect to see woodlands and lakeshore but not much else. Being the Driftless Area the ridge is ancient and flat-topped with no vista. What you won't find is a 'white mound' (check the local history).

White mound horse camping was great. Little more direction from camp staff as a 1st time camper would be great. Was told to go up to the campground sign well that was a mistake cause that's not the horse campground lol. That's further down the road. The website says site 7 has corrals. It's 1 corral. Would be best to know that. Sites 1-6 have first come 1st serve corrals. That's 3 corrals for 6 sites. Just so everyone knows. If your horse tie out on a high line you will be fine. Ours do not. As it goes for the corrals...Hope your horses are used to each other and get along. Trails were fantastic and it's beautiful. We had a great time but a little more transparency would be good.
