White River/Bogan Flats

Overview

White River/Bogan Flats offers a quintessential Colorado camping experience within the sprawling White River National Forest. Situated at an elevation of 7,700 feet, this campground provides a peaceful mountain escape under a canopy of mature aspen and evergreen trees. It is widely regarded as one of the most scenic spots in the Crystal River Valley, offering a primitive setting that emphasizes natural beauty over modern frills for those seeking a true outdoor connection.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located about 23 miles south of Carbondale along the scenic West Elk Loop Scenic Byway. The campground stretches along the banks of the Crystal River, providing many campers with the soothing sounds of moving water throughout their stay. Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Elk Mountains, including views toward the iconic Mount Sopris, the landscape is a stunning mix of lush riverside vegetation and dense forest.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, Bogan Flats provides essential facilities designed for a comfortable, off-grid stay. Key features include:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water accessible via hand pumps.
  • Individual sites equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a steel fire ring.
  • Level parking spurs that can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40 feet in length.

While there are no electrical or water hookups, the privacy and space between sites are significantly better than what is found at most commercial resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities nearby, starting with gold medal fly fishing and kayaking on the Crystal River. A short drive leads to the historic village of Redstone, where travelers can visit the Redstone Coke Ovens or explore local art galleries and shops. For a unique relaxation experience, the Penny Hot Springs are located just a few miles away, offering a natural soaking spot right along the river's edge.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for travelers who prefer a rustic camping experience and want to disconnect from technology and digital distractions. It serves as an excellent home base for nature photographers and hikers looking to explore the nearby Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. If you value quiet evenings, fresh mountain air, and star-filled skies over the amenities of a luxury resort, Bogan Flats is the perfect Colorado destination.

We were there for 3 nights. Site was nice and level, easy to get into and plenty of parking. Beautiful walk to the lake. Nice and quiet place to enjoy! Bathrooms clean and heated! We will definitely be going back!

We stayed 5 nights during the week and truly enjoyed our stay. Our site wasn’t too close to other sites and was pretty quiet throughout our stay. The location, close to Marble, Redstone and Carbondale was great! I would have given 5 stars however, throughout our stay, we had 3 pair of gloves come up missing. 2 pair on 2 separate nights that we initially thought ok, a raccoon made off with our gloves. BUT, on the very last night we had a 3rd pair come up missing from our storage compartment. And, 2 tent stakes placed in the path between our vehicle and camper with our rope placed over the top. These items were moved by someone. We are glad we didn’t have another night there. We thought it was all very weird.

If you're more inclined towards first-come first-serve campgrounds like myself, be forewarned that this now privatized campground is now (and has been for quite awhile I'm told) on a system utilizing online reservations via rec.gov (ie 'wreckyourplans.gov'), and gives preference to those who are better at planning well in advance than I. All that to say, I arrived here on a Monday in our tow behind tent camper with my two sub-highschool aged daughters and our dog; looking down on the campground on the drive in it appeared there was an RV convention going on and I had my doubts we'd find a site; I was happy to find a few with an 'open' sign on the post and claimed one for the next 3 nights paying with cash deposited via envelope into the campground fee station cylinder; coming back to camp after one night having spent all day away, I find a hand written note advising that I need to touch base with the campground host; he/Mike was nice enough, and explained to me that the site we claimed had been reserved online by someone who arrived to find their reserved site occupied by our tent camper starting on what would have been our 2nd night; at first it sounded like he expected us to take immediate action and move our camper to a different 'open' site; he explained that first come first serve open sites can only be claimed for one night at a time; he ended up giving us a little time and leeway saying he found another site for the online camper that they were content with allowing us to stay put for night #2 but that we would absolutely have to vacate the site first thing the next morning; we complied with the request which was a hassle to say the least. So here is where my gripe comes in: we woke up earlier than we wanted to so as to pack up/hook-up/move the camper to one of the 'open for one night' sites (which happened to be adjacent to the site we were leaving); we were gone all day again with activities and returned that afternoon to find the site still vacant; Mike the camp host came by and I asked him what happened to the online camper that was supposed to be occupying their reserved site; he didn't have a good answer and sheepishly acknowledged this situation could potentially reflect poorly on him if this camper didn't materialize; well, in fact no one showed that evening and when we woke the next day the site remained unoccupied. (Insert dissatisfied face emoji).

Camphost was epic! Gave us great areas to ride MTB and one of the nicest guys we’ve encountered, specially for being on the younger side. Love seeing younger couples outdoors enjoying life.

Loved this campground! The bathrooms were super clean and honestly didn’t even smell that bad. The location is great- only 10 min to marble or redstone, but about 40 to Carbondale. The sound of the river at night is awesome. Huge bear boxes to store all your food and such. Big picnic tables. The lower numbers seem to have more shade than most of the higher numbers!

I was delighted to finally get a reservation at this campground for the first time several weeks ago. The campground is well kept with no sign of trash and the bathrooms were all super clean. I was lucky to meet the camp hosts on my first camping trip a few weeks ago, and just enjoyed my second camping trip at Bogan Flats this past week and looked forward to friendly chatter with the camp hosts. The Wisdoms, Lori and Alva, are the most friendly camp hosts and again made my second weekend trip another pleasure. I look forward to their smiling faces my next camping trip Bogan Flats in the next couple of months. This quiet campground is nestled in the pine trees and has drinking water and many restrooms. This campground is minutes from busy Redstone and Marble.

Camp hosts were super helpful, beautiful campground, lots of access to Crystal River. We've had plenty of rain which made the river very turbulent and we were a little cautious with kids. Marble and Redstone are nearby with cool attractions, good hikes in the area. Clean sites.

Beautiful Campground with many sites on the river. Came in without a reservation and the camp host was very helpful! There is no cell service in the entire valley and wifi in Marble with a donation.
