White River/Prospector
Overview
Prospector Campground, managed by the White River National Forest, offers a classic mountain camping experience near Dillon, Colorado. Situated at a high elevation of 9,000 feet, this facility provides a scenic forest setting with convenient access to the sprawling Dillon Reservoir. Unlike modern private resorts, it focuses on the natural splendor of the Rocky Mountains, providing a peaceful retreat for travelers who appreciate dry camping and outdoor immersion in one of the state's most iconic regions.
Location & Surroundings
Located on the eastern shores of the Dillon Reservoir, the park is framed by the rugged peaks of the White River National Forest. The landscape features open areas with sparse lodgepole pines, offering campers expansive views of the water and the surrounding mountain ranges. Its proximity to the towns of Dillon and Silverthorne means travelers can enjoy a secluded mountain feel without being more than a few miles away from local grocery stores, supply shops, and restaurants.
Amenities & Park Features
Amenities at this Forest Service location are intentionally minimal to preserve the natural environment. While the park does not offer sewer or electrical connections, it provides the essentials for a self-sufficient stay. The campground features paved interior roads and gravel parking spurs that accommodate various rig sizes. Guests also have access to vault toilets and potable water provided via shared spigots throughout the loop. Each individual site is outfitted with a heavy-duty picnic table and a steel fire ring for evening campfires.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area surrounding the reservoir is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. A major highlight is the Dillon Reservoir Recreation Path, a paved trail used for cycling and walking that circles the water. Boating, kayaking, and fishing are popular activities, with the Dillon Marina providing rentals and boat launches just a short drive away. Additionally, the park serves as an excellent base for exploring the Eagle’s Nest Wilderness, where hikers can find dozens of trails ranging from casual walks to challenging alpine climbs.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is a top pick for travelers who prioritize a scenic and authentic Colorado experience over the amenities of a luxury resort. It is particularly well-suited for:
- Self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and boondocking.
- Outdoor enthusiasts wanting immediate access to water sports and hiking.
- Photographers and nature lovers seeking panoramic mountain vistas.
If you appreciate falling asleep to the sound of the wind through the pines and don't mind living off your battery power, Prospector provides a stunning backdrop in Summit County.

Keeping it real. Overbooked, the police had to be called in. Could hear 70 the whole time. Sites were large, but off leash dogs under things. Generators were loud most of the night. Had to leave early due to weather, but did quiet down after the weekend.

If Heaton Bay campground is packed out, why not head around the other side of Lake Dillon to enjoy Prospector? It is often less crowded. Good dirt road for last half mile, but can be driven by any sedan. Don't wimp put because you don't have 4WD. Campsites are in proximity to the lake (5 minutes walk) and decently spaced.

Beautiful campsites. Spread out from each other. Be advised, water is in the campsites, but NOT so you can fill up RV tanks.

Excellent campground. Only 1/3 occupied, extremely clean, including the toilets. Very quiet, but again, it's only 1/3 occupied. It's a little speedy at $26/night, but totally worth. For sure would stay here again if I am out this way.

Generally nice rustic campground. I deducted one star since it seemed half were locals, just looking to party with their water toys. And someone's car alarm going off at odd hours.

Fantastic views - NO potable water available because of some kind of bacteria. 30' Airstream travel trailer fit into the sites we selected- a lot of the sites are only for small rigs or tents - you have to be careful on your length and width (some sites are too narrow for slide-outs). Pics are from D-74 and E-82. Short drive into either Frisco or Dillon for supplies and water.

Prospector was a great place to hike with your pup(s). It was clean, the host was attentive, the water had iron in it which I am not into but it had water unlike so many this year. The trails were awesome!!! Me and my pup walked along the lake shore between loop D and E mornings and at dusk...BEAUTIFUL! Sites are relatively close but there's a lot of green between them. Many have nothing behind them but forest (love that)! There's trash bins but like maybe one per loop, water spigots around the loops (not at every site), vault toilets. I was in site 48D, no leveling needed, little patches of trees around me. I was in the "Y"of two roads (busy) but had toilet and water right across the street. I only stayed 2 nights but enjoyed my stay. Thunderstorm during the night kept the temperatures very comfortable.

We went in October and had a great stay. The toilets were clean and the hosts were very nice. The site was great & had lots of flat space for a tent. Was nice to walk to the water (although a bit steep to get down to it)

Very clean and well kept. Some unconsider camper decided to take our reserved spot, but the park keepers were very kind and even though they couldn't find the person in out spot, she did us one better and set us up on a site with water view that took our breath away and made our trip 100 times better. She was so kind and had such an amazing positive vibe we forgot about the issue in a hot minute. Bathrooms are super clean, no trash anywhere. Overall an amazing experience

Not anywhere close to Lake. Good trees & sites spread pretty well. Not incredibly busy. Stars were great! No hook ups.
