White Tank Mountain (Maricopa County Park)
Overview
White Tank Mountain Regional Park offers an expansive desert retreat across nearly 30,000 acres of rugged Arizona landscape. As the largest park in the Maricopa County system, it provides a deep sense of solitude while preserving the raw beauty of the Sonoran Desert. RV travelers primarily stay at the Willow Campground, which balances natural preservation with modern convenience through well-maintained facilities and scenic vistas.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Waddell, AZ, the park is nestled against the western edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. This location offers a dramatic transition from urban life to the towering peaks of the White Tank Mountains. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the valley floor, which transforms into a sparkling sea of lights after sunset. The surrounding terrain is characterized by ancient rock formations and iconic desert flora like the Saguaro cactus.
Amenities & Park Features
The Willow Campground features 40 individual sites designed for comfort and accessibility. Key park amenities include:
- Every campsite is equipped with water and electrical hookups to support various rig types.
- A centrally located dump station is provided for convenient RV waste management.
- Visitors have access to modern restroom facilities that include heated showers.
- The White Tank Library and Nature Center offers educational programs and indoor relaxation.
Each site also includes a picnic table and a fire ring, allowing for traditional campfire evenings under the Arizona stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, boasting over 30 miles of shared-use trails for hiking and mountain biking. The popular Waterfall Trail is a major draw, leading hikers to a collection of ancient petroglyphs and a seasonal waterfall tucked into the canyon. For those looking to explore beyond the desert, the nearby city of Surprise offers shopping and dining, while the park itself remains a premier spot for horseback riding and nature photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prioritize a quiet, scenic experience over the bustling atmosphere of a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for stargazers and photography enthusiasts who appreciate the dark, unobstructed desert skies. Because the sites are notably large and paved, it is also a preferred stop for big-rig owners seeking a reliable and spacious basecamp while exploring the West Valley.

The people are fantastic here! Lots of cool stuff and critters too! Make sure you go outside and meet the tortoise.

Always a pleasure visiting the nature center. The staff is great- knowledgeable and helpful. It is a great place to see snakes and scorpions behind glass and learn about local insects and animals. It is also a gift shop with fun things like rocks, books and other nature related products. It is attached to the library and there's a short trail that you can walk for free behind it also.

We're not a outdoorsy family, but wanted to check out waterfall route. Only regret is not staying longer.

Watching fireworks from the parking lot here was amazing. We could see every fireworks display from north to south for miles to the east. 10/10 best place to view fireworks on 4th of July.

Quaint gift shop and nature exhibit located within the library. There are a few easy trails just outside with some nice views.

Quaint little nature center nestles in with the White Tank Mountain park, next to a library. Several displays to see, before or after your hike and picnic.

A gem in West Valley. Easy hikes...petroglyphs....lots of history. Visit The Visitor Center first and then go explore. Pack a lunch...lots of places to dine and enjoy views. Every saguaro has it's own personality.

Vibrant Spring flowers, and rugged terrain shaped by the elements since the Tertiary period, If you need to get away from civilization and get back to nature, this is the place to go. Look at my pictures. Joyous Spring wild flowers, peaceful.breezes in.mountain pastures. Yes!!!
