Whitewater Memorial

Overview

Whitewater Memorial State Park serves as a serene tribute to American veterans while offering a premier outdoor escape in eastern Indiana. Established in 1949, this 1,710-acre park centers around the beautiful 200-acre Whitewater Lake. It provides a peaceful atmosphere where history and nature converge, making it a staple for regional RVers. The park is characterized by its lush forests, rolling hills, and a deep sense of community that honors those who served through its very name.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Liberty, Indiana, the park sits within the scenic Whitewater River Valley. The surrounding landscape is dominated by a mix of dense hardwoods and open water, providing a secluded feel despite its proximity to local conveniences. It is part of the larger Brookville Lake-Whitewater Complex, meaning travelers have easy access to expansive water systems and the rolling rural charm of Union County. The area is defined by its quiet country roads and vibrant seasonal foliage.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for various RV setups, offering over 230 electric campsites that accommodate both large and small rigs. The facilities are designed to support a comfortable outdoor stay with the following features:

  • Modern comfort stations with hot showers and restrooms.
  • A seasonal saddle barn providing guided horseback trail rides.
  • Access to a swimming beach and a variety of boat rentals.

The park also provides a convenient dump station and potable water for RVers, ensuring all basic needs are met during a multi-day stay at one of the spacious wooded sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities, from fishing for bluegill and bass to exploring the nine miles of hiking trails that wind through the park. Just a short drive away, Brookville Lake offers larger-scale boating and water sports for those seeking more adrenaline. History buffs can visit the nearby town of Liberty to experience small-town Indiana culture, or take a scenic drive to the historic village of Metamora, known for its working grist mill and canal boat rides.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for family vacationers and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, traditional camping experience over a high-traffic resort. Because the lake is restricted to electric-trolling motors, it is perfect for kayakers and paddleboarders looking for calm waters. It also appeals strongly to equestrian campers, as it is one of the few state parks in the region featuring dedicated horse trails and facilities, making it a versatile choice for diverse outdoor interests.

What a hidden gem kn the Indiana State Park system! The bathhouses were some of the best that I have seen. The camp store is well stocked and has almost everything you coukd possibly need. The location is fantastic and it is close to Brookville Lake and Mounds SRA. The campsites are a little close together. We are tent campers, so we tend to camp at non-electric or primitive sites. Some of the non- electric sites (our camp site) are right across the street from some of the electric sites, which means that you as a tent camper end up right across from a row of RVs. The trails are great and range from easy to rugged. The beach looks like it would be fantastic in the summer. I don't swim in lakes, but this beach looked inviting. The staff is friendly and helpful. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with this state park and we look forward to coming here again.

Ok place for hiking. But probably only worth going if you have a boat or are fishing

My husband and I went to Whitewater Memorial State Park cause we wanted to try there cabins. We stayed in cabin 5. It was nice place. I knew that we needed to bring sheets towels and washing towels. But once we got inside there's no dishes glasses forks spoons or cooking utensils. So we had to go to the store to get some stuff we needed. After all that. We decided to cook out some food and couldn't do that cause the raccoons were everywhere. We scared them off and they would come back.. The cabins are a nice place, but im not sure if I want to come back. They need to pressure washer the outside of the cabins cause too many spiders and cobwebs. If you stay here i hope your stay is nicer and raccoons stay away..

Its a nice place for the most part! If you are going to use the cabins, there is no wifi or phone reception and you will definitely want to bring your own air mattress because the beds are wrapped in an uncomfortable sticky plastic. The fishing was very meh as the bluegill population is insanely high. None of the bigger fish are hungry because they just eat the bluegill all day. The whole place is beautiful and there is nature everywhere! The beach was nice, but the sand isn't really fine enough to really feel like a beach. It was a nice little vacation and we will definitely be back!

Park is amazing. Word of advice. Don't camp in the loop 200. Spaniards took over the loop and it was very scary. We left a day early because of the sheer amount of them.

Camp here every year, cabins and tents. This past week we did the cabins and they never disappoint. My family love this park with the exception of the grumpy older woman working the general store. She didn't greet us when we all went inside and only spoke twice when to yell at my son for bouncing a ball and them snapped at my daughter for asking how much something was. My 10 year old daughter said wow what's wrong with her? I said she must be mad because she's stuck inside working on the beautiful day. Regardless we will still be frequent visitors.

Great campground nice friendly family atmosphere. Clean and well kept. Separate shower houses that lock which i prefer, hot water low pressure but hot. We took a guided nature hike looking for mushrooms that was exceptionally good. Great guide we literally found hundreds of mushrooms and fungus of various species that adults and teens enjoyed.

Overall, I feel like the park is decent at a wide range of activities, but spectacular at none. Multiple hiking trails were all overgrown and didn't provide many unique views or lookouts. I think my favorite might have been the Red Springs loop, which offered something more unique, was slightly less overgrown, and a shorter hike. I then spent some time paddling around the lake in my kayak. It's not a big lake and you can easily explore the whole lake in around an hour. One unexpected and pleasant surprise that was really neat was the sunflower fields, which were nearing full bloom. The entrance of the park is also nicely landscaped with sunflowers.
