Willamette/North Waldo Campground
Overview
North Waldo Campground, nestled within the expansive Willamette National Forest near Oakridge, OR, offers one of the most serene and pristine camping experiences in the Pacific Northwest. Perched on the northern shore of the legendary Waldo Lake, this campground provides a quiet retreat away from the hum of modern life. It is widely recognized for its proximity to some of the purest lake water in the world, making it a bucket-list destination for RVers who value natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere over resort-style amenities.
Location & Surroundings
Located at an elevation of 5,414 feet, the campground is surrounded by a dense canopy of Douglas fir, mountain hemlock, and true fir. The landscape is defined by the Waldo Lake Wilderness, where the air is crisp and the night skies are exceptionally dark. The surroundings are incredibly tranquil because internal combustion engines are restricted on the lake, ensuring that the only sounds you hear are the wind through the trees and the soft lap of water against the volcanic shoreline.
Amenities & Park Features
As a forest service facility, North Waldo Campground is designed for dry camping, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available for RVs. However, the park features paved loops and parking spurs that can accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Essential amenities include vault toilets and potable water accessible via several hand pumps located throughout the site. Each campsite is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, providing a classic outdoor living space for your stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is Waldo Lake itself, famous for visibility that can reach depths of 120 feet. Visitors can enjoy non-motorized boating, such as kayaking and canoeing, or use electric motors at slow speeds. Land-based adventurers can explore the Shoreline Trail, a 20-mile loop popular with mountain bikers and hikers that offers stunning views of the Cascades. For those who enjoy fishing, the lake is stocked with trout, providing ample opportunity for a quiet afternoon on the water.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking-style travel and want to immerse themselves in a rugged forest environment. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly paddlers and mountain bikers, who seek direct access to high-quality trails and water. If you are looking for a tech-free escape to reconnect with nature in a setting that feels truly remote, North Waldo Campground is the perfect fit for your next Oregon adventure.

Was absolutely beautiful. One of the best campgrounds in Oregon. The wildfire took a heavy toll on it, it is still closed but can be accessed via the hiking trails which are open

Wonderful campground! I reserved at North Waldo, went to this one on accident. Got in late. Single mom with 2 teen girls and was frazzled. The host Stacey was so beyond sweet as well as her husband. They offered I stay in there campground. Tons of first come first serve spots. Most better than the ones that you reserve. They helped me set up and put me at ease. Seriously camp hosts with the mostest!! Camp here if you have never been to Waldo before :-)

Stacey, the camp host was awesome. Her dog Tripper was a great host as well! Beautiful campground, not for big rigs but excellent for tents, campers, and short towables. Great sunsets. Beautiful shoreline trail below the lakefront campsites.

Wonderful campsite, especially if you get a site that's lakefront. Place is kept clean and neat. The camp host, Stacey, was great. And her dog, Tripper, who engaged my pup for a romping good time. As someone camping alone, I felt very safe and secure. Will be back.

Canoeing, mountain biking, hiking and other activities are great here. The scenery is beautiful and the water is clear. Prepare for mosquitos! Bug spray is not enough. If you are tent camping, bring a mosquito tent with lantern bug zappers and electric fly swatters if any mosquitos manage to get in your safe zones.

I stayed at Islet the second week of August. It was busy, but not full. Decent restrooms, nice host, easy to get around with lots of nice walking areas. The islet is fun to explore. Mosquitos weren’t as bad as I expected during the day, but evening and morning they were pretty bad. I wasn’t able to reserve one of the sites near the water, but I was pretty close to the swim beach which was nice for walking over with my SUP. Which, by the way, this is some of the best paddling I’ve ever experienced. In the morning, when the water is calm, the lake is so clear you can see everything on the bottom. The lake being so shallow, and warm (in the afternoon when the sun heats up the water), makes it popular for families with young children. This is my main complaint, I didn’t mind the families so much as all the stuff (floats, blankets, etc) being left behind on the beach and in the water for days on end. Still very memorable to be able to camp and swim in this beautiful lake.
