Overview
William C. Sterling State Park offers a unique coastal experience as the only Michigan state park situated on the shores of Lake Erie. Spanning over 1,300 acres, this destination combines vast wetland ecosystems with sandy shoreline access. It is a popular spot for travelers who want to balance outdoor recreation with the convenience of being near major travel corridors. The park provides a serene escape where the sunrise over the Great Lakes sets a peaceful tone for your stay.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in Monroe, Michigan, the park sits at the intersection of natural beauty and industrial history. The landscape is defined by the Lake Erie shoreline and extensive lagoons that weave through the property. Visitors are surrounded by lush marshlands that serve as a critical habitat for migratory birds. The proximity to I-75 makes it an accessible stop for those traveling between Michigan and Ohio, yet the interior of the park feels worlds away from the highway noise.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is designed for modern RVers, featuring over 250 sites equipped with 50-amp electrical service. While the park maintains a natural feel, it includes essential comforts like modern restrooms and hot showers. Families appreciate the expansive sandy swimming beach and the designated picnic areas. For those bringing boats, the park offers a large launch facility providing direct access to some of the best walleye fishing in the region.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the beach, the park features over seven miles of trails perfect for hiking and biking through the marshes. Anglers will find plenty of opportunities in the lagoons or out on the lake. Just a short drive away, history buffs can explore the River Raisin National Battlefield Park, which details local War of 1812 history. The nearby city of Monroe also offers charming local dining and shopping options for a break from camp cooking.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who enjoy exploring coastal wetlands. It is also a fantastic fit for boaters and fishing groups looking for easy Lake Erie access. Because of its location near the border, it serves as an excellent home base for RVers wanting to visit both Detroit and Toledo while retreating to a quiet waterfront setting at the end of the day.

This place is just horribly unhealthy. It is directly, practically on top of, a gross factory- emitting non stop, fumes. You can smell it and the air quality in the location is poor. Every view from the lake has factories. The water is full of dead fish and the trail is filled with sulfur smells. This is a sad situation for the city. This is 2025 and we know about clean energy..or at least non-deadly energy. Skip this place. Monroe..you can do better for your citizens.

The sand in parts of the beach is all finely crushed shells, really cool! Beach was clean, very little trash and water was nice and warm great place to swim. Good place to go fishing, great place to sit and relax.

The park offers some good points, but the beach could use some improvement. The beach itself was just okay and not as clean as I would have liked. However, I did appreciate the shaded areas provided by the trees, which was a nice break from the sun. The park play area for kids was a great feature and a definite plus."

We absolutely love it here!! The beach area has mostly grass and a small sandy shore (not far to walk!) and the trees along the beach help provide a lot of shade! There are also grills and tables for public use. Along with a playground, sheltered bathrooms, and vending machines. This has become a staple for us on a hot sunny day!

This park was so relaxing. Even with the winds being really strong that day it only increased the beauty of the park. This is a perfect place to enjoy with your family or alone. You can do everything from exercise, meditate, or simply unwind. It was definitely worth my 3.5 hour drive.

Visiting from Chicago and stopped by for a quick hour for fishing. Boy I'm amazed how well kept this park is, specially the fishing pier. Caught two fishes; a freshwater white drum fish and a catfish. Definitely recommended for a chill fishing trip.

Such a great park with wide open spaces, trails, beach access, fishing spots, and a playground for young kids. Sites were spacious, nice fire pits and picnic tables. Some sites are waterfront with great views and a perfect area for sunrise. Cabins are available too. With so many stars on clear nights, you can see a ton of constellations.

I really wanted to show my brother at least one of the Great Lakes for his bday. Lake Erie is the closest to us. We grabbed some food and went to the closest park with a beach. When we showed up we were stunned to see how big the park was. Lots and lots of parking! They have rental cabins, camping, day visiting, and a boat ramp! The water was calm and clear. We enjoyed hours of walking up and down the shore. It’s a beautiful spot to have a picnic, walk your dogs, read a book, etc. I’ve already been back with friends and my husband. We’ve all enjoyed it every time! I recommend stopping!

Good for family outing, there are several trails for hiking and biking, park includes campgrounds and access to beach and boat docks. Park is well maintained and there are clean bathrooms. This is a 4 rating as the cost for entry is 11 dollars, if you are planning to visit multiple times then get the annual pass.
