Wilson (Hell Creek)

Overview

Wilson (Hell Creek) is located within Wilson State Park, often cited as one of the most beautiful settings in the Sunflower State. Known for being situated on the shores of the clearest lake in Kansas, this park offers a rugged shoreline characterized by sandstone cliffs and scenic vistas. It provides a peaceful retreat where the focus is firmly on the natural environment and outdoor recreation, rather than the bustle of city life.

Location & Surroundings

Set in the heart of the Smoky Hills region, the park is easily accessible yet feels worlds away, located just north of I-70 near Wilson, Kansas. The surrounding landscape features the unique Post Rock country, where historical limestone fence posts dot the rolling hills and native prairies. The Hell Creek area sits on the south side of the reservoir, offering elevated views of the water and access to scenic chalk bluffs.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering numerous sites with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups to accommodate various rig sizes. Guests have access to potable water, modern shower buildings, and conveniently located dump stations. For those bringing watercraft, the park features well-maintained boat ramps and fish cleaning stations, ensuring a seamless experience for anglers and recreational boaters looking to enjoy the reservoir.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crown jewel for land-based adventure is the Switchgrass Bike Trail, a multi-use loop recognized nationally for its challenging terrain and stunning lake views. Anglers frequent the waters for trophy-sized striped bass and walleye. For a taste of local culture, the nearby town of Wilson showcases its rich Czech heritage, while the unique folk art installations in Lucas provide a fascinating day trip for curious travelers.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is an ideal match for mountain biking enthusiasts and water sports fans who prefer a rugged, natural setting over a manicured resort. It is perfect for families looking to spend their days swimming or kayaking and for RVers who appreciate dark night skies and the quiet, rhythmic atmosphere of the Kansas plains. It is a true haven for those who find beauty in geological formations and vast horizons.

Already planning another trip to come here again, so close to Wilson lake Kansas! Also they have a Cozy coffee shop and bakery! Blueberry muffins, scones common cinnamon buns and other baked goodies! Make fresh on site! Great coffee too and also breakfast sandwiches all are 👍

Great stay for the night while driving thru Kansas. Great price and very friendly and helpful owners! Easy to find and away from the 70 hwy! Very quiet and pull thru site was perfect for my 35 ft motorhome pulling my Mini on back.

We enjoyed our stay at this campground. We stayed 1 night on our way to Colorado. We've stopped in Wilson to eat at Made from Scratch several times. Wilson is a small quaint town that feels very safe. We were happy to find this small, quiet campground. We didn't go in the bathrooms, but the building looked nice. The lady that met us was very nice and helpful. Our site was nice and level, had 50 and 30 amp, easy hookup to utilities. We will definitely stay here again.

Our stay here was absolutely perfect. The area is well kept, showers and facility is clean, laundry and dryers are available, WiFi is quick, and the owners are so kind and hospitable. The RV park feels safe and the surrounding neighborhood and town is so charming. We had a good nights rest with it being quiet. If you’re ever needing a place to stay … my family and I recommend this cozy park!

This place truly is a wonderful hideaway in a small, cozy, small Kansas town. I came during the off season, so it was exceptionally quiet, but even if it was busy, due to its great location, road/highway noise is not at all an issue. The sites are large, gravel and mostly level, though some minor leveling might be required. Each site has water, electric and sewer, though a peculiarity is that at least for the site I was in and those nearby, the sewer connection designated for your site will be on the passenger side, instead of the drivers side. Do note, the electrical pedestals are older, so if you have a trailer that is wired for 50A but technically overdraws, but you've been fine at other campgrounds, I would exercise caution here. There are showers, bathrooms and great laundry facilities right on site. But more than just the facilities, the owners absolutely make the place. Dave and Lisa are warm, welcoming and some of the most sincere people you will ever meet. They will help you feel right at home, no matter how far home really is! They will treat you like an old friend in the best way possible. The Czech egg is probably the biggest major attraction in the area, but even if you're passing through, I can't recommend this place enough. Next time I'm driving through Kansas, I will definitely be back!

If you find yourself in the middle of nowhere Kansas, this is a wonderful little RV Park to stay at. Laundromat, showers, cafe, and even a dog park are all right at the park. Full hookups, so you can stay comfortably. Not to mention how kind the owners are. If you have some time, you can check out the historical buildings in town, or the world’s largest Czech egg. Several decent options for food in town, as well. My dad, daughter, and myself planned on staying the night on our way back from Colorado. You see, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer February of 2023, and was finally feeling well enough after chemo to do some bucket list camping. On the morning we tried to leave the RV park, my van immediately heated up and wouldn’t cool down. I ended up having to get it towed to the next town over, and waiting a few days to figure out what we could do. The owners were incredibly kind, and understanding about the entire situation, and let us and our camper stay until we could figure out what to do. Luckily, the van was fixed in a couple of days.

I would highly recommend this location! If we ever drive through this area again we’re definitely staying here! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Safe and welcoming, clean and comfortable! Dave and Lisa are two of the nicest people you will ever meet and they make sure your stay is enjoyable. They have remodeled this historic campground for today’s traveler — with even more conveniences to come. Nice showers, tidy laundry space, and don’t miss out on the new cafe (coffee drinks, breakfast options, etc.) only steps from your site. I won’t hesitate to return should I be in the area again! *Book via their website for best pricing.*

Summary: Full hookups - 30/50 amp, water and sewer, gravel pull throughs. Laundry, restroom, showers. Quiet, no frills, calm environment, clean & well kept, easy to work with. Call for reservations. Close to a downtown area with breakfast. This park is fantastic in so many ways. While there are no frills for kiddos here, there is plenty of wide open space for them to run around and get energy out. The upkeep of this property is fantastic. We have stopped here 5 or so times and every single time it is well kept. They are in the process of building more to this property and have full functionality of all amenities. You can walk to the small downtown area from the site. There is a place for breakfast up the road as well. They do have picnic tables next to the sites for use - bring your own shade. If you come at night, get your lamplight and flashlights ready for hookups... it is dark out there. I included a picture of the highway at night driving in so you can see how dark it is. It is worth it though. You will be able to see all the stars at night once camped.
