Wilson Lake (Lee County Park)

Overview

Wilson Lake Park, managed by Lee County Conservation, offers a quiet retreat just outside Donnellson. This Lee County gem covers 20 acres of lush Iowa landscape, centered around a picturesque 6-acre lake. It is designed for travelers who appreciate the simplicity of nature rather than the bustle of a commercial resort. The park provides a clean, well-maintained environment where the sounds of local wildlife replace highway noise, making it a reliable choice for a peaceful overnight stay or a relaxed weekend getaway.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the heart of southeast Iowa, providing a convenient stop for those traveling along Highway 218. While it is easily accessible, the park feels worlds away from the city, nestled among rolling hills and mature timber. The surroundings are characterized by typical Midwestern charm, with native prairie grasses and quiet woods that offer a buffer from the outside world. Its proximity to the Missouri and Illinois borders makes it a strategic base for exploring the tri-state region.

Amenities & Park Features

RV travelers will find campsites equipped with electrical hookups that accommodate a variety of rig sizes. The park features a modern shower house and restroom facilities that are kept tidy for guests. For those looking to enjoy the water, there is a fishing jetty and several points of access around the 6-acre lake, which is regularly stocked with bluegill, bass, and channel catfish. Families can take advantage of the on-site playground and picnic shelters, while the mown hiking trails offer a chance to explore the local flora and fauna.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the rich history of Lee County. A short drive takes you to Old Fort Madison, a reconstructed 1808 military post, or the scenic river views in Keokuk. Nature enthusiasts can visit the nearby Shimek State Forest, one of the largest contiguous forest units in Iowa, which offers additional miles of hiking and equestrian trails. The local community of Donnellson also hosts seasonal events that provide a glimpse into rural Iowa culture and hospitality.

Who This Park Is Best For

Wilson Lake is ideal for nature lovers and anglers who prefer a quiet, low-key camping experience. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for an affordable outdoor space where kids can play and fish safely. If you are an RVer who enjoys smaller county parks over crowded commercial campgrounds, this location will fit your travel style perfectly. Easy to follow trails. Beautiful flower field. Lots of butterflies. Little dock in the lake to put your feet in water or fish. 2 fun play grounds. Nice camping available. Nice clean restrooms. Shelter house clean and well maintained. Local free events such as the lee county activities.

Absolutely magical. Beautiful place with lots of trails and open spaces. Nice little lake. Stayed in the Prairie view cabin and it was incredible.

Love the cabins and the park. But the fishing flat out sucks. For the past few years, the ponds have become overrun with pan fish. The fish have become bait shy due to all the fishing.

I wanted cabins, fishing, campfire and a nice view for my bachelorette party and that was exactly what I got! I loved that the cabins where tucked away in a cove of trees so we where more secluded from everyone else and it had its own pond to fish out of and watch the wild life. I can’t get over how clean the water was in the bigger lake. Didn’t catch any fish but will definitely come back and try again. It was worth the 4 hour drive.

Great trails, nice and wide, well kept and easy to navigate. Those are some of the best things that this Park has to offer. Along with fishing, birding, and camping, you can spend a few hours or days just getting away from it all. This is a sanctuary for all of those who like to keep it simple. Where you're from or who you are doesn't matter here. It's nestled in between farmland so in some cases you may see a cow or two. You can get your fix whether it's a picnic or whatever you want. As always be respectful and remember to keep this the way you want it to be when you come back.

Wilson Lake Park provided a nice afternoon for fishing. The lake had an abundance of large blue gill and sun fish. There were also several small to medium sized trout along the shores. There is a nice campground. Also, the park was well cared for and there was no tall grass around the lake. We fished from several spots along the shoreline and caught 5 fairly large sun fish and blue gill. We also caught one six inch trout. All were released back into the lake. The day provided a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the nice scenery provided by the tree around the lake shore. Our furry friend enjoyed laying under a couple of trees along the shore as well. If you want to beat the heat and try your hand at fishing, I recommend Wilson Lake Park. It is easy to get to and has a lot of outdoor space to enjoy!
