Winchester Lake
Overview
Winchester Lake State Park offers a serene escape on the edge of the Camas Prairie in northern Idaho. Nestled within a lush forest of Ponderosa pine, the park surrounds a 103-acre lake that serves as the centerpiece for year-round outdoor recreation. This destination provides a classic Idaho camping experience where the focus remains on reconnecting with the natural world. Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend of shoreline fishing or a peaceful basecamp for exploring the high plateau, this park balances accessibility with a genuine mountain wilderness feel that appeals to travelers of all ages.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the charming timber town of Winchester, ID, the park sits at a refreshing elevation of approximately 3,900 feet. The local landscape transitions beautifully from rolling agricultural hills into the dense evergreen forests that define the region. Its unique position on the Camas Prairie makes it a popular, cooler alternative to the warmer climates found in the nearby Lewiston valley during the summer. Visitors will find themselves completely surrounded by scenic vistas, diverse wildlife, and a quiet atmosphere that feels miles away from the hustle of modern urban life.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features several well-maintained camping loops designed to accommodate a variety of RV sizes and configurations. Many of the sites offer water and electric hookups, providing a comfortable middle ground between rugged dry camping and high-end luxury resorts. On-site facilities include modern restrooms with hot showers and accessible vault toilets located conveniently throughout the grounds. For those who enjoy being on the water, the park provides a sturdy boat ramp and multiple accessible fishing docks that make it easy to spend a full day by the lake without needing a boat.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the wide variety of recreational activities available right at their doorstep. The lake is a premier spot for year-round fishing, including ice fishing during the winter months and trout or bass fishing in the spring. Hikers and mountain bikers can explore over seven miles of gentle, forested trails that loop around the water's edge. Just a short distance from the park, visitors can visit the Wolf Education and Research Center, which offers an educational look at local wildlife and the importance of conservation in the Idaho panhandle.
Who This Park Is Best For
Winchester Lake is an ideal choice for nature lovers and families who are seeking a slower, more intentional pace of travel. It is particularly well-suited for birdwatchers and photographers who enjoy the stillness of the woods and the frequent sightings of osprey or white-tailed deer. Because the campsites are carved directly into the treeline, it is perfect for RVers who prefer a wooded, scenic setting over the more traditional paved parking lot style of private parks. If you value direct access to serene water and quiet trails, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

Very nice and clean park. We stayed in one of the Yurts. The staff is super nice and friendly. The Yurts were clean and campground very well set up. There is a dock about 300 feet away with nice fishing! They also provided a canoe, and you can barrow fishing poles with tackle!!! Thanks, we’ll be back for sure.

These pictures are from Winchester State Park. It is a nice little park. There are yurts and campsites available for use. All the roads are paved and there is plenty of parking in the day use area. A lot of the campsites are flat. The visitor center has loan backpacks for day use. Overall I was impressed

We camped in our small Class A first few weeks in June: weather is very iffy, there was a LOT of rain & thunderstorms, once school lets out there are large groups of families, kids and dogs, so don’t expect peaceful camping. The quiet hours are observed though. The sites are not level and there is no sewer or dump within the park, but there is a sewer dump a few miles into the town of Winchester. Having said all that, the park is well maintained, they have very nice and helpful volunteers and rangers, several nice hiking trails, fishing and non-motorized boating, picnic table, fire ring, clean showers and bathroom facilities. It really is a beautiful state park and generally quiet.

Great campground. Clean sites. Lots of mature trees. Excellent shower facility. Yurts are a neat option for groups with individuals who don't have a tent/RV. Yurt renters have access to canoe and propane grill. Man-made lake shallow and green with algae. Not great for swimming. Nice hiking/biking trails around the lake and through the forest with educational signage. Amphitheater is nice and operates on Saturday nights. Companion sites too small to fit 2 trailers comfortably. Certainly not with tow vehicles. If you have a visitor arriving after hours be sure to bring exact change in cash to pay for parking or you will get a ticket from an ambitious and unforgiving park ranger.

We stayed at the Ponderosa yurt. It is amazing. The yurt was great since the weather turned almost freezing and they have heaters installed. The fishing was fantastic. Limited out on trout most days. Also caught several small perch, a bunch of really fat blue gills, and a single white crappie. Saw lots of beautiful wild flowers. Hiked several trails. The yurt came with access to a canoe so we spent some time in the water during the good weather. Also a great place for birders, as we saw several varieties. The area is gorgeous and so serene. A must visit location in the great big beautiful outdoors of northern Idaho.

Haven't stayed here yet, but we love to play at the playground and hike around this lake. The Clearwater Trekkers have gone snowshoeing here, and the kids love it. Great place for ice fishing in the winter, snowshoeing, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and just generally hanging out.
