Worthen Meadow Campground

Overview

Nestled at an impressive elevation of 8,800 feet within the Shoshone National Forest, Worthen Meadow Campground offers a classic high-country experience for rugged travelers. This primitive camping area serves as a peaceful gateway to the Wind River Range, providing a cool summer escape for those passing through central Wyoming. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and emphasizes a deep connection with the natural landscape, making it a staple for those seeking a quiet mountain retreat away from the noise of more developed parks.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated directly on the shores of the Worthen Meadow Reservoir, surrounded by dense stands of lodgepole pine and vibrant alpine meadows. Located about 20 miles southwest of Lander, the journey involves navigating winding mountain roads that transition from high desert to lush sub-alpine forest. The scenery is dominated by the rugged granite peaks of the Wind River Mountains, which offer a dramatic and inspiring backdrop for every campsite, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive forest site, Worthen Meadow is best suited for dry camping enthusiasts who arrive fully prepared with their own power and waste management. The park features approximately 28 individual campsites, each equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the facility provides essential mountain amenities:

  • Access to several vault toilets maintained regularly by the Forest Service.
  • Potable water available via a traditional communal hand pump during the peak season.
  • Spacious sites designed to accommodate smaller RVs and travel trailers.
The sites are generally well-spaced and shrouded in trees, offering a sense of privacy and quiet that is rarely found in modern commercial RV resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this scenic area. The reservoir is a popular spot for trout fishing and non-motorized boating, such as kayaking or canoeing, thanks to its calm waters and high-altitude atmosphere. Hikers can easily access the Middle Fork Trailhead nearby, which serves as a major portal into the breathtaking Popo Agie Wilderness. On the drive from Lander, visitors often stop at Sinks Canyon State Park to witness the unique geological phenomenon where the Popo Agie River disappears into a massive limestone cavern.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize solitude and mountain scenery over luxury amenities and high-speed internet. Because of the winding access road and modest site dimensions, it is most comfortable for small to mid-sized trailers and motorhomes rather than large big rigs. It is a perfect fit for wilderness photographers, anglers, and backpackers looking for a rugged basecamp to explore the high-altitude trails and pristine backcountry of Wyoming.

A very fun place to play for the day. We fished. Played in the water. Had a little campfire to roast hotdogs at dinner time. We’ve gone up twice. Once on a week day and once on a Saturday. The weekday was understandably way less busy. Much cooler than down in Lander, a perfect way to escape the summer heat.

Visited mid-week in July. It was quiet and other campers respected the quiet hours. The bear box at our campsite wasn't very clean, but we kept food in the vehicle anyway. I'd camp here again without a second thought.

We camped here July 4 thru the 8. We had a great time. The camping spots are limited but we lucked out with a great spot. There are no hook ups for rvs. Well water and vault toilet. The camp host is great and very helpful. We enjoyed our time at worthen meadows.

Overall a pretty great campground. Ideal unquestionably for weekday camping to avoid crowds! There are two separate loops, the first of which I believe has 21 Campsites and we nicknamed Party Cove (super loud campers with little camping etiquette; chainsaws starting up 8am, metal detectors beeping and adults yelling by 9..on a Wednesday morning) and the second loop is 8 campsites on the SE part of the lake, at higher elevation and better views; a complete night and day experience with our super quiet and thoughtful neighbors once we switched it up and moved there. Absolutely beautiful setting! The campsites are very well established, there are *at least* 3 pumps for potable water dispersed between all the sites, and the outhouses were some of the cleanest I've ever been in. The bear box in the site was surprisingly incredibly handy as an extra countertop space. We tent camped and were very comfortable. Did return from fishing one evening to find an rv backed into our campsite, family unloading and attempting to take over our spot which we'd been in for 3 days...was a little socially uncomfortable but thats life. I will say, I've camped for many years, never seen so many RVs gathered in one spot. We were most definitely the only tent campers. Next time we'll be going further backcountry on 4x4 trails to avoid camping suburbia. Fishing good, but very small. Definitely more bites on the East end by the dam than any other part we explored.

Love it here. Quiet, good sites next to the lake, and great hosts at the campground. The outhouse is well an outhouse but at least you don't need to use pine cones if you forget your own paper.
