Worthington

Overview

Worthington State Forest offers one of the most rugged and scenic camping experiences in New Jersey. Located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, this state forest covers thousands of acres of mountainous terrain. The park's history and its role in protecting the river corridor make it a cornerstone of local conservation efforts. Unlike commercial resorts, it prioritizes a deep connection with the natural environment. Travelers come here to escape the bustle of the city and immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of the Delaware River valley.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in Columbia, NJ, stretching along seven miles of the Delaware River. The surroundings are defined by the dramatic landscape of the Kittatinny Ridge. Massive hardwood trees provide a dense canopy over the campsites, offering shade and a sense of isolation from the outside world. The drive into the park along Old Mine Road is itself an experience, winding through dense woods and past historic landmarks. The proximity to the river ensures a constant soundtrack of flowing water and provides ample opportunities for waterfront exploration.

Amenities & Park Features

It is important for RVers to note that Worthington is primarily a primitive camping destination. There are no water, sewer, or electric hookups available at the sites, requiring visitors to arrive prepared. The park provides basic essentials to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Picnic tables and fire rings provided at every campsite.
  • Access to composting toilets located throughout the grounds.
  • Seasonal shower facilities available for registered campers.

This setup encourages a traditional outdoor experience where the focus remains on the surrounding wilderness and the riverfront access rather than modern digital conveniences.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity in this region. The park features over 20 miles of hiking trails, including a challenging stretch of the Appalachian Trail. A popular trek leads visitors to Sunfish Pond, a crystal-clear glacial lake designated as a National Natural Landmark. For those who prefer the water, the Delaware River is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Anglers often visit the area to test their luck catching smallmouth bass or shad during the seasonal runs.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for the self-contained RVer who appreciates a traditional boondocking style of travel. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of nature rather than a television, this is your spot. It is perfect for avid hikers and those looking to disconnect from technology while exploring one of the most iconic geological features in the Northeast. Large rigs should exercise caution as the roads can be narrow, making it best suited for smaller campers, truck campers, and van lifers seeking a quiet escape.

Went for a weekend camping trip and float on the water. Absolutely amazing slice of nature. The facilities were nice. The road contains some larger pot holes that can be maneuvered with a watchful eye. Had a blast and now have memories the kids and I will have forever

Camped here with Scouts. Beautiful location, saw different wildlife, even a bobcat for not enough time to get a picture, and staff very pleasant and helpful.

We recently stayed at a campground near the Delaware Water Gap, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience! The campsite is very scenic and surrounded by lush greenery, with beautiful old trees and stunning landscapes all around. It’s located right next to the Delaware River, which adds even more charm to the setting. You can reserve a site online, by phone, or even just show up and pick a spot — but there are specific rules, so it’s a good idea to check the website before coming. Each campsite has a designated fire pit and a grill. The grills aren’t super clean for direct cooking, but they work well with foil or skewers. The campground is clean and well-maintained. Staff regularly tidy up the sites, mow the grass, and clean the fire areas before new guests arrive. The staff is friendly and helpful — you can even buy firewood at the office. There are recycling bins and secure trash cans, which helps keep the area nice and tidy. The location is convenient too — just 5–7 minutes away, there are gas stations and stores, and about 10 minutes away is a Walmart, so you don’t need to bring much with you. It’s very peaceful — quiet neighbors, lots of wildlife like chipmunks, raccoons, birds, and rabbits. There are open fields for larger groups and more private, cozy spots for a quiet getaway. The campground also has a playground for kids, restrooms, showers, and a dishwashing station. Overall, we were very happy with our stay. It’s a beautiful, relaxing, and well-organized place — highly recommended! Just come and enjoy nature. It’s truly a gem.

Beautiful park. Lots of sights to see. Lots of nature to be in. Beautiful views all around. Lots of hiking trails throughout. Several waterfalls. It is so amazing here. Definitely need to see at least once in your life. I will definitely find a way to spend more than 1 day here.

Got a spot 5! View was really nice! There was no water available at the spot, make sure bring a basket if you don’t want to drive back and forth for clean water.

The campground here was actually great. We pitched our tents and we were able to park our cars at the campground. The bathroom was very close, fully stocked with paper towels and toilet paper. It was also cleaned while we were there. I would go back.
