Young

Overview

Young State Park encompasses over 560 acres along the scenic eastern shore of Lake Charlevoix. Established in the early 1920s, this destination offers a classic Michigan outdoor experience characterized by dense forests and crystal-clear waters. Travelers visiting this Boyne City staple will find a mix of rolling hills and cedar swamps that provide a peaceful backdrop for a lakeside getaway. It is widely recognized for its beautiful sandy beach and well-maintained campgrounds that cater to those seeking a traditional park atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled just northwest of downtown Boyne City, the park sits in a prime location for exploring the Charlevoix County region. The surrounding landscape is defined by the expansive Lake Charlevoix, which has been consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful inland lakes in the country. Within the park boundaries, visitors are surrounded by diverse ecosystems including lush lowlands and hardwood forests. The proximity to the water creates a cool microclimate that is particularly refreshing during the warm summer months in Northern Michigan.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several camping loops with a total of 240 sites, many of which provide electrical hookups suitable for modern RVs. While the sites maintain a rustic charm, the park offers modern conveniences such as clean restroom facilities and hot showers. Recreational amenities include a designated swimming area with a guarded beach, a boat launch for easy water access, and several miles of hiking trails. The Dearborn Trail is a highlight for those looking to stretch their legs through the wooded terrain.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park's beach and trails, the nearby town of Boyne City offers charming boutiques, local eateries, and a vibrant farmers market. For those willing to drive a short distance, the Avalanche Mountain Preserve provides breathtaking views of the lake from its summit. Boating and fishing are the primary draws, as Lake Charlevoix connects to Lake Michigan via the Pine River channel. Golf enthusiasts will also find several championship courses within a twenty-minute radius of the campground.

Who This Park Is Best For

Young State Park is an ideal destination for active families and nature lovers who prioritize water-based recreation and hiking. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy a state park setting over a commercial resort and appreciate having direct access to one of Michigan's premier lakes. Because of its spacious layout and natural beauty, it also appeals to photographers and birdwatchers looking to immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the Northern Michigan wilderness.

Already took a week off in June to come back. My 2 year old had the best time at the beach. Very clean restrooms

At Young State Park along Lake Charlevoix's shoreline in Boyne City, Michigan was feet-wetting fun, clean and clear. The sand felt like a tantalizing foot massage.

We love Young State Park. We've been coming here for nearly 30 years. Some of the nicer sites are a bit smaller. We don't mind because of our smaller trailer. My biggest complaint here is that there's just a single dump spot with 2 potable fresh water and a non potable rinse for the dump spot. This makes for a long wait to dump and get water during check in and check out. We enjoy hiking the trail that starts near the boat launch. It's a bit challenging especially after rain, as the trail isn't particularly well maintained. Prepare for mosquitos on the trails. There's a lot to do in the area, from Boyne City to Charlevoix, South to Fisherman's Island and North to Petoskey. All a short trip away. Lots of wine tasting and farmers markets during the warm months. If you like boating and fishing, Lake Charlevoix is great. I like to get drone video of the beautiful water from the boat, since State Parks don't allow you to launch/land in them.

One of the State Park favorites by far. Clean & quite with beautiful lake views and easy access throughout the Park. Nearby Boyne City with a very nice bike path access. Staff maintains a friendly & visual presence within the park that aids in keeping things under control and safe. Excellent travel destination for any camper.

A mighty fine experience! I even had a wild rain storm roll in at 3am that I actually enjoyed lol. This is literally the perfect campground. Very laid back with plenty for the kids to as well. 1 of the most scenic state parks in Michigan.

Beautiful park lived the set up , right on lake charlavoix. We were here may 4 th thru may 7 th. And 3 of our sites were infected with dog ticks ,I couldn't believe it that far north. Unheard of up their really can't tolerate those little blood suckers⚠️⚠️🤕😡

Very tight park, maybe it was the weekend we had booked but every spot was filled and it seemed very busy. Drive carefully as there are many families with young children and pets. Closer to the water the sites were wider. Good trails for biking or walking. Close to boyne city downtown which has events, farmers markets etc…

Great place to camp. Nice lake in walking distance, with a park store. Bathrooms and showers. 3 miles from Boyne city, but is very secluded so you don’t feel like you’re close to town. The park is about a half mile from the entrance. Tent camping and rv camping. Boat launch, swings by the beach. Electrical hookup. Benches at each site with a fire pit. Some sites are right on the water. $10 fee to unload your rv. Recreational pass required.

We decided to camp at Young State Park before the Annual Bridge Walk and it was a nice night to camp. We would recommend the smaller campground near the lake as it was quiet, clean and didn’t feel too crowded. The water is crystal clear and beautiful, it’s a nice little beach to watch boaters and a beautiful sunset.

I think this was my favorite park this year. Such beautiful beach areas and the water was amazing. The campsite itself was spacious, 50 amp, but a good amount of the sites are not level. Bathrooms and showers were cleaned daily and free. Definitely bring shower shoes because they can get dirty quickly between cleanings.
