Acadia/Blackwoods

Overview

Blackwoods Campground offers a quintessential national park experience within the heart of Acadia. Nestled among towering pines and balsam firs, this historic campground provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. It is one of the most sought-after locations in the park, serving as a primary basecamp for exploring the rugged coastline and granite peaks of Mount Desert Island. The atmosphere is quiet and reflective, allowing the sounds of the nearby Atlantic to set the tone for your stay.

Location & Surroundings

Located on the eastern side of the island near the village of Otter Creek, the park is perfectly positioned for outdoor enthusiasts. It sits just off the Park Loop Road, making it incredibly convenient for accessing the park's primary scenic drive. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense woodlands and is within a short walking distance of the rocky shore. A dedicated trail leads from the campground directly to the ocean cliffs, offering panoramic coastal views that are especially stunning at sunrise.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional national park facility, Blackwoods prioritizes a rustic atmosphere over modern luxuries. The park features wooded campsites suitable for various RV sizes, though travelers should be aware that there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at the sites. Facilities include flush toilets and running water in the restrooms, while a convenient dump station and potable water fill stations are provided for RVers. During the summer months, the campground hosts educational ranger programs that provide deep insights into the local ecosystem.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying here puts you minutes away from some of Maine’s most iconic landmarks. You can hike the Cadillac Mountain summit or explore the famous Ocean Path located nearby. The free Island Explorer shuttle stops directly at the campground, providing easy transportation to Bar Harbor for dining and shopping. This allows guests to leave their rigs behind and avoid the stress of narrow park roads. Other must-see spots like Thunder Hole and Jordan Pond are just a short drive or shuttle ride away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who value location and natural beauty over resort-style amenities. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of the wind through the trees and prefer direct access to hiking trails, Blackwoods is a perfect fit. It is best suited for travelers who appreciate a rustic camping style and want to be in the center of Acadia National Park's most famous attractions while maintaining a sense of wilderness solitude.

Blackwoods Campground is nice, clean, and peaceful. As other reviews have mentioned it is advised to take your own hand soap to the bathroom because there is only hand sanitizer available. My wife and I haven’t done much tent camping so she felt safer with all the other tent campers around us. We enjoyed our 2 nights there and the adventure of using the coin operated showers just outside the campground. While planning your trip just start saving your quarters (for the showers😀) and enjoy your adventure!

We camp here every year and love it! We love the peace & nurture surrounds - easy access to trails and coast for sunsets. Super clean—bathrooms, campsites, trash areas. Dog friendly! No showers, but there is one close by!

Stayed here multiple times, first time back to Acadia in years, and this time with the kids in tow. They did great and we had a great time. I always wish I could stay here longer but normal life awaits. Site is easy access to two island hopper lines. My only comment is I wish there was a showering place (not pay) on site. Highly recommend for seeing the park at all times of the day.

The campground is quieter than I expected. The bathrooms have hand sanitizer and running water, but no showers. The sites aren't too clustered together for comfort, but it's not like you're secluded from others unless you get lucky. Everyone we met was lovely as were the staff. You can get wood on highway 3 just outside the entrance to the park, none sold inside.

We had a lovely time at the Blackwoods Camp Ground (less the rainy weather) Our campsite was well maintained (A029) and walkable to two different restrooms. (Make sure to bring your own hand soap as it is not provided in the bathrooms.) The drive to Bar Harbor is roughly 15-18 minutes. It was fairly quiet when we’re there for 4 nights.
