Adirondack/Eighth Lake

Overview

Eighth Lake Campground provides a serene and rustic retreat in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. Situated on the shores of its namesake lake, this state-run facility is known for its wooded privacy and deep immersion in the natural landscape. Unlike paved commercial resorts, this park emphasizes the quiet beauty of the forest, offering a true escape from the bustle of modern life. It serves as a central hub for those looking to explore the rugged terrain of northern New York while enjoying the peaceful rhythms of lakeside living.

Location & Surroundings

Located on Route 28 in Inlet, NY, the park is uniquely positioned between Seventh and Eighth Lakes. The surrounding area is characterized by dense Adirondack forests and high-altitude waterways that remain cool even in mid-summer. The nearby town of Inlet provides a charming backdrop with small-town shops and eateries, while the vast Moose River Plains are just a short drive away. This location offers easy access to some of the most pristine water systems in the state, making it a geographic gem for outdoor enthusiasts.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional state campground, the amenities focus on enhancing the outdoor experience rather than providing luxury hookups. Each site features a spacious layout with a fire ring and picnic table, accommodating both tents and RVs. Key facilities include:

  • A paved boat launch for easy access to Eighth Lake.
  • Dedicated picnic areas and a small sand beach for swimming.
  • A convenient RV dump station and water filling locations.
  • Access to well-maintained hiking trails directly from the campground.

While there are no electric or water hookups at individual sites, the park provides vault toilets and central shower buildings to ensure basic comforts are met during your stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The area is a paradise for those who love to stay active. Visitors often spend their days paddling and fishing for lake trout and smallmouth bass. For hikers, the trail to Bug Lake offers a moderate trek through scenic woods with minimal elevation gain. Just a few miles down the road, the village of Old Forge provides family-friendly entertainment at the Enchanted Forest Water Safari or scenic views via the McCauley Mountain Chairlift. The proximity to the Fulton Chain of Lakes ensures that boaters have miles of water to navigate.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize scenery and solitude over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect match for families looking to introduce their children to the great outdoors and for couples seeking a quiet getaway in a wilderness setting. If your travel style involves kayaking, mountain hiking, and evening campfires under a dark, starry sky, Eighth Lake will feel like home. It is best suited for those who appreciate a slower pace and the simple joys of a woodland campsite.

The campsite itself was spacious, with a decent fire pit and a picnic table in good condition. The ground was covered in leaf litter, which raised some concerns about ticks. They also did not enforce the rule of 2 tents per site as our neighbors had five tents and many people at one site who were loud, but otherwise the site was pleasant and the lake was beautiful. Unfortunately, the bathrooms were a major disappointment. They were in poor condition, and there was an inappropriate carving in one of the stalls. Unlike many state campsites, there were no 988 crisis hotline stickers posted in the bathrooms. Overall, the restroom facilities are in serious need of updating. The roads throughout the campground are rough, with several large potholes that made me worry about damaging my car. Signage for parking was unclear, and one staff member I encountered was surprisingly rude. While I understand the campground’s efforts to encourage recycling, having someone monitor the garbage room and make you dig through your trash felt overly nitpicky. With some improvements—especially updating the bathrooms, fixing the roads, clarifying parking, and addressing staff attitudes—this campground could be a much more enjoyable experience.

We are in campsite 27. The only minor inconvenience is the difficulty to get to the water from the site, taking kayaks to and from water. But that is nature now campgrounds fault. Plus we are camping. If you don't want to get a little dirty, don't go camping. This is a beautiful place.

Sites themselves are good but shower house is gross! Needs at least a through clean job but better yet needs a new building.

Absolutely love this place!! We fell upon this place; we were supposed to stay at Moose River Plains campground but somehow ended up at Eight Lake Campground and couldn’t have been happier!! The cam area is very big and we had plenty of room to fit our SuV and tent right near each other. We had a nice view of the lake. The other campers are not on top of you like if you went to a KOA campground and it is very peaceful. We heard owls we saw chipmunks and we saw a few fish. Definitely worth the trip.
