Algonquin/Kearney Lake

Overview

Kearney Lake Campground offers a truly authentic wilderness experience within the iconic boundaries of Algonquin Provincial Park. Located conveniently near the East Gate, this destination provides a serene escape for travelers looking to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Ontario. It serves as a quieter, more intimate alternative to the larger, busier sites along the corridor, focusing on the peaceful sounds of the forest rather than modern distractions or commercial noise. This is a place where the natural heritage of Algonquin takes center stage, offering a reflective and calm environment for every visitor.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the Unorganized South Nipissing District, the campground is tucked into a lush, dense forest canopy. Its location along the Highway 60 corridor makes it easy to find while maintaining a sense of deep seclusion from the outside world. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield, with the clear, cool waters of Kearney Lake providing a stunning focal point for visitors. The rolling hills and mixed wood forests create a vibrant backdrop that changes beautifully with the seasons.

Amenities & Park Features

This is primarily a rustic campground, which is an important detail for RVers to note before arrival. There are no individual electrical or water hookups at the sites, making it a great spot for those with solar setups or those who enjoy traditional camping. The park provides vault toilets and drinking water stations throughout the loops to ensure basic needs are met. One of the most cherished features is the sandy beach area, which offers a gradual entry into the water, making it a perfect spot for a refreshing afternoon swim or launching a small watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

There is no shortage of adventure nearby, as the park is a gateway to some of Algonquin’s best features. The Mizzy Lake Trail is just a short distance away, offering a famous loop known for frequent moose sightings and diverse birdlife. Additionally, the Algonquin Visitor Centre is nearby, featuring world-class exhibits and a panoramic viewing deck. For water lovers, the lake is ideal for paddling a canoe or exploring the shoreline by kayak during the early morning mist when the water is often glass-still.

Who This Park Is Best For

Kearney Lake is an exceptional choice for self-sufficient RVers and small camper vans that do not require constant shore power. It is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and those who prioritize privacy and a direct connection to the outdoors over resort-style luxuries. If your travel style involves unplugging from the digital world to enjoy wildlife viewing and the scent of pine needles, this campground will likely be a highlight of your trip through Ontario’s wilderness.

We have been to this campground 3 years in a row now. Its perfect for kids. There is a small sandy beach, safe trails for biking, a clean comfort station and nice spacious campsites. We rented canoes from algonquin outfitters and canoed to the island. Highly recommended for families with young children.

This camp ground is just so beautiful I literally fell in love with the setting and everything about it. I just loved it more than anything I have camped at ever. Just perfect in every way.

This campground is quite small. The non electric sites have a very narrow and twisty road to go down. We got rain so it was muddy. We had a beautiful and relatively private campsite right on the lake. There’s lots of wildlife viewing opportunities. The bathrooms and showers were quite clean for a provincial park campground. We will definitely be back!

My husband and I stayed at this campground for the first time and will definitely be back! The lake was beautiful for swimming and we hope to bring our kayaks next time. There was another small lake/swamp area behind our site and even saw a moose walk and swim across! Washrooms were clean, showers had hot water. We went May 24 weekend and it was busy but quiet. There is not an office or store on the grounds but we just had to go across the highway and the office at Pog Lake is just a few seconds away to get firewood and ice.
