Allegheny/Tracy Ridge Recreation Area
Overview
Tracy Ridge Recreation Area offers a serene escape within the vast expanse of the Allegheny National Forest. Located near Bradford, Pennsylvania, this campground is a premier destination for those who want to immerse themselves in a rugged woodland environment. Unlike modern commercial resorts, Tracy Ridge prioritizes the preservation of the natural landscape, providing a quiet retreat where the sounds of the forest take center stage for every visitor.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on a high plateau, the park is surrounded by a dense canopy of mature hardwoods, including majestic oak and hemlock trees. Its location provides convenient access to the eastern side of the Allegheny Reservoir, though the campground itself sits at a higher elevation, offering a sense of deep seclusion. The surrounding geography is defined by rolling hills and deep valleys, creating a picturesque backdrop for every campsite while keeping travelers close to the scenic Allegheny River corridor.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping facility, meaning there are no electric hookups or water connections at the individual sites. Travelers should arrive with full water tanks and charged batteries to enjoy the dry camping experience. However, the park does provide essential facilities such as vault toilets and hand-pumped water stations. The campsites are notably spacious and well-shaded, often accommodating larger rigs that are equipped for self-contained camping. A significant feature is the direct access to the North Country National Scenic Trail, which meanders right through the recreation area.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in the immediate area. The Tracy Ridge Trail System boasts over 30 miles of interconnected loops, making it a haven for backpackers and day hikers looking to explore the wilderness. Just a short drive away, the Willow Bay area provides a boat launch for those looking to explore the Allegheny Reservoir by motorized boat or kayak. Additionally, the historic town of Bradford offers local dining and unique cultural stops like the Zippo/Case Museum for a quick afternoon excursion.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for adventurous RVers who value privacy and nature over luxury amenities. If you enjoy boondocking or have a solar-powered setup, you will appreciate the deep tranquility found here. It is particularly well-suited for avid hikers and birdwatchers who want to be steps away from a major trailhead. Those seeking a traditional resort experience may find it too basic, but for the wilderness traveler, it is a perfect match.

Quiet, remote-ish campground. No showers, you have to go up the road to willow bay for that. It's quiet, it's not complicated to get to, it has a surprising number of sites and loops to choose from. Fire pits and tables at the sites in the loop where I stayed, clean and not grown in.

Awesome campground. Very quiet at night. Did a first come first serve type of deal. Had a great time and will be back

Beautiful, private and quiet campground. Lots of options and plenty of space. Fire ring, picnic table provided. Was able to find a lot of wood around too for building campfires. 2 main downsides were that pretty much every campsite was very rocky so it was very challenging to put down stakes for a tent. Secondly, the trails were a little confusing. The blazes seemed to be messed up on the trail I was on and I ended up getting a little lost in the woods. Eventually I found my way back on the trail I originally came on. Despite that, the camping trip was easy. Went on off-season so I didn't need a reservation. Just showed up and then paid before I left. I simply put money in an envelope and slipped it into a locked metal box (the pay station). I was there for 3 days and only saw 1 other person walk by our campsite. A few cars drove by but other than that it was very private. Would definitely recommend coming here if you just want a space to hang out and pitch a tent.

Campground itself is pretty run down but the bathrooms were clean, the camp sites are huge, and it is extremely affordable.
