American River Resort is a family-friendly resort located in Coloma, California. The resort is situated on the banks of the American River and offers a variety of activities for guests to enjoy. An awesome place for camping and glamping. It’s a fairly large site that is well maintained and a mixture of tent sites and cabin sites. It’s fairly close to the river where the water flows pretty strong. They said it’s a level 3 which has a good amount of rapids.

The camping ground also provides river rafting services and rentals. I didn’t check the price since we booked at a different provider that has a guide as well.

The beach area where they launch is a bit too rapid for our kids to play since it gets deep about 5 feet out.

The campsites are fairly spacious and have all the amenities of any campgrounds in the area. Their restrooms are exceptionally clean and numerous. Some of the sites might be a bit of a walk.

They have a small pond near the parking that the kids had a blast fishing. It’s catching and release so the fish gets really smart. Still a few bites that gave the kids a great time. Fishing in the river is kind of bad since the water runs fast and lots of weed and cotton balls in the water due to the upstream dam release which makes the water dirty.

Overall a great site and with a bit of everything for everyone.

5-star rating (would have been 4.5 if possible, but not worth dropping down to a 4)

PROS: This campground is AMAZING! I highly recommend camping here. It is great for families, couples, or anyone who wants a peaceful, beautiful campsite. It has two river access points. The staff is very friendly. The campground itself is very clean, and the bathrooms/showers are maintained excellently. It is a GREAT value for the cost. The weather in early June was very pleasant, just a little hot. There are plenty of garbage cans around that are regularly emptied to keep the campground clean and safe. There was one group of teenage campers that was very loud at times, but everyone respected the curfew hours quite well. We are definitely coming back!

CONS: The campground road is not well-maintained. There are many potholes and large holes along the side of the road. If you have a larger truck, it may be difficult to back into your campsite; we had to pull in. It is not the worst issue, but it is noticeable. There is NOT a lot of fishing opportunities, if this matters to you.

Folks for the love of all thats good book your rafting trips and camping with the American White water Expeditions! Hands down the best rafting experience my friends and family have had EVER! Complementary night of camping the night prior to your booked rafting trip and optional breakfast buffet 😋. What more could u want?! The camp resort is absolutely freaking awesome! Showers, bathrooms and changing rooms on location, a small catch and release fishing pond on site and easy access to the river. I will be booking here again at least once or 2x a year with friends. Ps we travel from LA just for this place!

Stayed here for 3 nights. I went to the front desk on 4 separate occasions during normal business hours and the front desk was never open. I had a time sensitive question and there was nobody around to talk to. Tried calling the front desk and they didn't answer the phone either. On the last day, we couldn't find the dump station and while walking around the front to find someone to help, there were other guests trying to find someone to talk to and they couldn't find an employee either.

They also don't have WiFi or laundry machines which is a real bummer. This place basically stays in business because of their location because it's definitely not their customer service or amenities. The bathrooms are decent but the shower pressure is super low which is a real bummer for someone with thick textured hair.

A few weeks ago we spent a couple of nights in one of the cabins.  It had a wonderful view of the American River, a deck to hang out on with a gas grill included, and a full kitchen.  We drove through the campground and it looked well kept.  We never did see a staff member for the entire time we were there however.  Even for check in and check out, the main office was closed.

Only experienced the camp sites.  Very well maintained, flat camping areas with nearby parking and easy access to clean water and well maintained bathrooms.  Really nice being near the river...great natural white noise for excellent sleep.  Looking forward to the next opportunity to camp here and maybe check out the cabins.  Rooms rating would be n/a at this point because I only experienced tent camping.

My group of 7 adults had to make a last minute shift in plans for our recent camping trip. American River Resort turned out to be a great option for us. The Platform Tents along the River were clean and comfortable, and we were able to set up our cooking, dining and relaxing areas easily. The sound of the River was amazing white noise at night! Bathrooms and shower facilities were clean, but the 1/4 mile walk required planning! A quick drive to restaurants, nightlife and history.

This place has something of everyone.  Spots for tents, vans, RVs and cabins. Park was well maintained and staff were helpful and friendly. Bathrooms and showers were kept clean at all times. Lots to see and do around here and I look forward to a return visit soon.

We utilized the American River Resort for several different aspects of a recent family reunion. 36 people total.

Positives: Location! The location is ideal for anyone looking for time by the river and easy in and out for rafting the American River.

Rafting! Mostly positive, initially we spent the first mile or so on the river worried about our guide who was irresponsible in her decision to still guide a raft while ill and having difficulty breathing. There were moments where our boat felt very concerned and very unsafe. The guide made the smart decision to pull over and let another guide step in. That is where we met Luke. Luke turned the trip around and made the experience better than we could have ever imagined. We had 5 boats total for our large family and every single one had a great time with their guide on the river.

50/50: Food, Cabin Lodging, Service

The food situation was not at all as advertised. We were under the impression our large group would be dining as such, with our own space and able to enjoy our meals without a time limit. We sat at outdoor picnic tables with the rest of the resort, or whoever has signed up to eat the meal being provided. The initial lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers were fine (how would anyone mess that up), but other meals had questionable cuisine.. including a gray potentially molded frittata of some sort for breakfast. They advertised beer and wine for dinner but, there was no wine. We felt very rushed and often uncomfortable at times due to the staff pressuring us to arrive and leave within certain time limits, again not as advertised. We were told completely different times than what we were provided when we booked. We are a large hungry family and were often rationed on the food and members were told they could not have a second of something. Totally not what we were expecting and not worth the money to eat at the resort.

The service provided was about 50/50. Some members of the staff were friendly, eager to help and informative. Others were rude, unfriendly and one in particular we avoided due to the way she treated myself and my wife.

The cabins: fantastic location and spacious, the air conditioning units inside the cabins cannot keep up with the heat, if you’re worried about the heat the river does bring some reprieve thankfully but the cabins turn into saunas.

When I spoke with the reseverationist, I was told that since it was the off-season, they would be open to a refund in case of weather. Weather happened. When attempting to get a refund, they were asking $30 for cancelation..

The best rafting company out there. This was my second time using them and everything was just as awesome. The first time we had Michelle as our guide, she knows what she is doing and makes everything fun and exciting. We requested her this time around, but we got Christian instead. He was just as Awesome, fun, and hilarious Our group of 5 girls had the boat to ourselves which was great also. I HIGHLY recommend this company and ask for either Michelle or Christian, you wont regret it.

It was our first time with American river resort company and I would say they did their best to make the trip fun and comfortable for their guests. We took full day river rafting trip and our guide/coach Rich was amazing. He kept educating and entertaining thru-out the trip and did not let it become boring at any given time during the 6 hour expedition. Food during the lunch break was very well administered with adequate precautions for social distancing. I would definitely recommend this company and revisit them again. I also liked the pictures taken by their staff and option to purchase for all the picture at very nominal price.
