Angeles/Los Alamos

Overview

Los Alamos Campground, situated within the Angeles National Forest near Lebec, California, serves as a serene retreat for travelers navigating the Tejon Pass. This facility is managed by the USDA Forest Service and offers a traditional camping experience that prioritizes proximity to nature over commercial frills. It serves as the primary campground for visitors to the nearby lake area, making it a popular choice for those looking to combine mountain scenery with water-based recreation in a peaceful setting.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is positioned in a transition zone between the high desert and the rugged mountains. Surrounded by rolling hills and oak woodlands, the site provides a beautiful contrast to the nearby Interstate 5 corridor. At an elevation of approximately 3,500 feet, guests can enjoy slightly cooler temperatures than the valley floor, along with expansive views of the Tejon Pass landscape. The area is particularly striking during the spring when wildflowers bloom across the hillsides.

Amenities & Park Features

As a forest service site, the focus is on a rustic experience rather than modern luxuries. The campground features paved parking pads that can accommodate various RV sizes, though it is important to note there are no hookups available. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. On-site facilities include flush toilets and seasonal potable water stations, providing essential comforts while maintaining an authentic, dry camping atmosphere for self-contained travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main draw for many is Pyramid Lake, located just a short drive away, where visitors can enjoy boating, jet skiing, and fishing for striped bass and trout. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area offers world-class off-roading trails for various skill levels. Additionally, history enthusiasts can explore Fort Tejon State Historic Park, which preserves the remains of an 1850s army post and features massive, ancient valley oak trees.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, natural setting over the amenities of a commercial resort. It is a favorite for boating enthusiasts wanting early access to the water and for travelers seeking a scenic stopover between Northern and Southern California. If you enjoy stargazing and a slower pace of life, this mountain getaway offers the perfect environment to disconnect and enjoy the rugged beauty of the California interior.

We stayed in the group campsite and it was perfect! Clean bathrooms, privacy, and the camp host was amazing! We will definitely be back!

Perfect stop for mid-week overnighter in March, campground nearly empty. It was quiet and clean, bathrooms too. A fire had come through fairly recently, so some campsites have only charred brush and trees, but the hills still had nice vegetation. The highway is hidden from view in some campsites, and negligible road noise, so it feels very remote. Would stay here again.

We came Valentine’s weekend on a spur of the moment roadtrip. The campground is large and was empty save for the camp host. Flush toilets, very decent! Spigots with running water near every campsite in addition to an area for teeth brushing and face washing. Campsites are sandy so easy to pitch a tent. It gets very, very cold at night in February so pack appropriately! Beautiful view of mountains and we saw tons of birds, rabbits, and even one deer!

We came here in dusk seeing running around rabbits. After setting up the tent we had a really good dinner with our good friends with lot of booze and nice tequila in flickering fire and starry night. Faraway strings of beautiful yellow and red light flickering and moving on freeway 5. Sleeping with cricket singing and night cold weather is interesting and peaceful. In the morning we had breakfast with bees flying around our food and some birds with blue tail feathers. This camping have really good view surrounding with some not much tall trees, good well kept restrooms with sinks, toilet bowls (having bunches of toilet paper and running water). Close by around 15 minutes car driving or 30 minutes bike riding we have Buck Creek trailhead around 7.5 miles. This is not my trail recommendation. It’d better enjoying water activities in Pyramid Lake Recreation Area with $15 parking per vehicle. This recreation area has fishing, swimming, sky jetting, boating… with dog friendly. Spending almost whole day at this beautiful area we came back our camping site to see most of our tents, canopies flying everywhere by strong wind (I don’t know by effect of Hilary Hurricane or by default of this location). Some one told us the wind will gone after sunset. However we decided to leave 1 day earlier than planed. I wish you all have a good time with beloved family and friends in this camp site. Best regards.
