Arapaho-Roosevelt/Columbine

Overview

Columbine Campground serves as a serene gateway to the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, located just minutes from the historic district of Central City. Situated at a high elevation of 9,200 feet, the park is characterized by its lush canopy of lodgepole pine and aspen trees. This is a seasonal destination where visitors can escape the summer heat and enjoy the authentic Rocky Mountain wilderness in a quiet, forested environment. It offers a primitive experience that emphasizes the natural beauty of the Front Range over modern technology.

Location & Surroundings

The park is conveniently positioned along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, providing easy access to some of Colorado's most breathtaking vistas and historic routes. Its proximity to Central City and Black Hawk means you are never far from local history, yet the dense forest creates a feeling of total isolation. Travelers should navigate the steep mountain grades carefully, as the climb to this high-country retreat is part of the adventure. The surrounding terrain is rugged, featuring rocky outcrops and deep valleys that define this iconic region.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility, meaning amenities are focused on the essentials for a quality outdoor stay. The park provides the following features for campers:

  • Vault toilets that are well-maintained and accessible from each loop.
  • Potable water available through manual hand pumps during the peak season.
  • Spacious sites equipped with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings.

Because the sites are tucked into the woods, they offer significantly more privacy and space than typical commercial RV parks. However, guests should arrive prepared for dry camping, as there are no utility hookups or dump stations available on-site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Guests have immediate access to world-class recreation, including the Peewink Mountain OHV trails and numerous hiking paths that wind through the forest. For those interested in local culture, the nearby town of Central City offers historic casino gaming and the famous Central City Opera House. You can spend your morning trekking through gold-rush era ghost towns and your afternoon enjoying a fine meal in the neighboring town of Black Hawk. The area is a paradise for photographers and history buffs alike.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is best suited for adventurous RVers who prefer a rustic, off-grid experience over modern resort conveniences. Due to the terrain and site sizes, it is particularly ideal for small to mid-sized rigs, truck campers, and van lifers who are self-contained. If you are looking for a peaceful basecamp that balances mountain solitude with the excitement of historic mining towns, this is the perfect Colorado stop. It is a top choice for travelers who want to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.

A place to truly experience the majesty of the Lord's creation, up close and personal... I could never get enough of it. It makes one's soul rejoice, for truly. the whole Earth is full of His glory... - Isaiah 6:3

I've been exploring Colorado's national forests for over 40 years, starting with childhood trips to Arapaho National Forest near Empire. Now living closer to Roosevelt National Forest, I still find it just as special. What I love most is the ability to stop almost anywhere and discover a new trail. The vastness of these mountains is incredible—you can hike for decades and still find places that feel untouched. Someone once told me that if you flattened all the Rockies in Colorado, the surface area would exceed that of Texas, and after all these years of exploring, I absolutely believe it. This forest is a treasure worth protecting and visiting.

Challenging, especially for someone from Florida. Elevation, don't underestimate it. Beautiful views, worth the effort.
