Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area/Five Points Campground
Overview
Five Points Campground serves as a premier destination within the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area for travelers seeking a deep connection with the Colorado landscape. Situated directly on the banks of the Arkansas River, this facility offers a rugged riverside experience that highlights the natural beauty of the region. It is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, ensuring a well-maintained environment for those who appreciate the outdoors and a authentic sense of place along the water.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 20 miles west of Cañon City along Highway 50, the campground is tucked into the heart of Bighorn Sheep Canyon. The surrounding terrain is characterized by towering rock formations and the rushing waters of the Arkansas River. Visitors often spot local wildlife, including the namesake bighorn sheep, grazing along the steep canyon cliffs. The atmosphere is defined by the constant, soothing sound of the river, providing a serene mountain escape far from the noise of city life.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive camping location designed for those who enjoy dry camping. The campground features clean vault toilets and individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. One of the most appreciated features is the inclusion of heavy timber shade shelters at many sites, which offer much-needed relief during the sunny summer months. There are no hookups or potable water stations available on-site, so RVers should arrive with full tanks and sufficient power to be self-contained.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the river itself, which provides world-class opportunities for Gold Medal trout fishing and whitewater rafting. Launch sites are located nearby for those bringing their own gear or booking with local outfitters. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, featuring one of the world's highest suspension bridges. For those looking for local culture, the historic downtown area of Cañon City offers charming shops and the popular Royal Gorge Railroad.
Who This Park Is Best For
Five Points is best suited for independent RVers and van lifers who prioritize stunning natural views over luxury amenities. Because the sites vary in size, it is an ideal fit for small to mid-sized trailers and motorized units looking for a rustic stopover. It is the perfect choice for outdoor enthusiasts who want to wake up steps away from the water for a day of paddling or fly fishing in a tranquil, non-commercialized setting.

Beautiful scenery! Relatively very quiet at night. Nice sites with plenty of room!! $14.00 a night.... perfect!!! Definitely saved this on Google Maps!!

Across from a river that has a fishing bridge but very little access for other activities. There is no water available. Bring your own. The vault toilets are decent. Kind of pretty if you like the desert look. Solid picnic table and fire ring. I didn't think you should have to pay 10 per car on top of the camping fee. There really isn't a great river access.

An absolutely gorgeous place! We saw a female bighorn bit unfortunately too ar away to get a picture. Loved driving toward Silida when the Songre De Cristo Mountains Popped into view, they really stand out! The campground was quiet and seemed well managed and clean.

Such a great stop to catch your breath. Sometimes it is our destination while driving along the Arkansas River. Other times it is a great place to stop on our way into the mountains. Either way, looking out over the river is breathtaking. In summer the rafters go by. There is a small beach where you can wade into the water, but there are lots of rocks, so wear water shoes. Plus it is ice cold most of the time. Still fun to dip your toes when on a road trip.

This is a great campsite. I have come here two years in a row and stay one night and raft the next day. Each campsite has space for a tent that is all gravel, a picnic table and a metal fire pit with a grate to cook something. There is good space between each campsite. There is a bathroom too on site, no running water. You can walk across the highway and there is an overlook over the water. This is where the five point rapid is. There is an eddy that is sandy where you can get in river, just be careful to not go out too far and get sucked into the white water. There is no phone service here. I often see big horn sheep from my campsite up the hill.
