Arroyo Hondo Campground
Overview
Arroyo Hondo Campground, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, offers a rugged and tranquil escape for travelers seeking the raw beauty of northern New Mexico. This dispersed, primitive camping area is designed for those who prefer a no-frills outdoor experience over modern resort luxury. Nestled within a deep canyon carved by the Rio Grande, it serves as an authentic basecamp for adventurers looking to disconnect from the grid and immerse themselves in the high-desert wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
Located near Carson, New Mexico, this site sits within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. The surrounding landscape is defined by dramatic volcanic plateaus and steep canyon walls that create a sense of profound isolation. Because the area is remote, visitors should be prepared for gravel road access and limited cellular reception. The stark, arid terrain offers breathtaking vistas that change color with the movement of the sun, highlighting the unique geological history of the region.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive location, meaning guests should arrive fully self-contained. The campground provides basic essentials, including vault toilets and fire rings, but there are no water hookups, electricity, or dump stations available on-site. The sites are generally scattered, providing plenty of privacy between neighbors. The environment is strictly leave-no-trace, so campers are expected to pack out all trash and respect the delicate high-desert ecosystem to ensure this wild space remains pristine for future visitors.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of Arroyo Hondo is the immediate access to world-class fly fishing along the Rio Grande. Hikers will find numerous trails that wind along the canyon rims, offering challenging terrain and expansive views of the river far below. Bird watchers often spot raptors, including golden eagles and hawks, soaring through the thermals. For a change of pace, the artistic hubs of Taos and the historic village of Arroyo Hondo are located within a reasonable driving distance for exploring local culture.
Who This Park Is Best For
Arroyo Hondo Campground is best suited for boondockers and tent campers who are comfortable with self-sufficiency and primitive conditions. It is an ideal destination for anglers, photographers, and hikers who prioritize direct access to public lands over modern convenience. Because of the rugged access roads and lack of services, it is less appropriate for those traveling in oversized motorhomes or those who require full hookups, constant connectivity, or immediate proximity to urban conveniences.

Great place to camp and do river activities. Gets hot with the sun and not much shade, so bring a shade structure.

Absolutely beautiful area for camping. The restroom is clean and there are trash and recycling bins available. Access to the river is superb—fishers and river goers will enjoy the easy and close proximity to the water.

A gorgeous, clean, wonderful, easy to get to camping area on the River. Had no problem getting in and out in my 32ft motorhome. I think we paid only $7.00 a night. Unbeatable and unforgettable.
