Ashley/Buckboard Crossing

Overview

Located within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Buckboard Crossing offers a rugged yet scenic high-desert experience. Situated at an elevation of 6,100 feet on the western shore of the reservoir, this park is managed as part of the Ashley National Forest. Visitors are greeted by expansive views of the water set against a backdrop of rolling sagebrush hills and dramatic rock formations. It serves as a primary gateway for those looking to explore the unique landscape where the high plains of Wyoming meet the deep blue waters of the gorge.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned approximately 25 miles south of Green River, WY, making it a remote but accessible destination for travelers. The Flaming Gorge Reservoir dominates the landscape, providing a striking contrast to the arid, sun-drenched terrain. The surrounding environment is home to diverse wildlife, including pronghorn, mule deer, and various birds of prey. Because the site is located on an open plateau, guests can enjoy unobstructed sunset views and vast night skies that are perfect for stargazing away from city light pollution.

Amenities & Park Features

While the setting is natural and rustic, the park provides essential comforts for RV travelers. It features over 60 campsites, several of which offer electric hookups to accommodate modern rigs. On-site facilities include a dump station, seasonal drinking water, and flush toilets. For those bringing watercraft, the Buckboard Marina is located conveniently nearby, offering a boat ramp, fuel, and supplies. There is also a dedicated fish cleaning station, which is a vital convenience for the many anglers who frequent these waters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw here is world-class fishing, particularly for trophy lake trout and kokanee salmon. Boating, water skiing, and kayaking are also popular activities directly accessible from the shore. A short drive allows visitors to explore the Flaming Gorge Dam or take a scenic trip to the Red Canyon Visitor Center for breathtaking canyon vistas. The Green River itself offers additional fly-fishing opportunities and rafting adventures just north of the reservoir, providing a variety of water-based recreation options within reach.

Who This Park Is Best For

Buckboard Crossing is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who prioritize water access and natural beauty over resort-style luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for boat owners looking for a convenient base camp near a full-service marina. Families who enjoy a peaceful, quiet atmosphere will appreciate the open spaces and the lack of urban noise. If you are an RVer seeking an authentic Wyoming experience with plenty of room for larger trailers and a focus on recreation, this park is a perfect fit.

We stayed at buckboard crossing campground for two nights. The views were beautiful with nice sunset and starry nights. We've seen deer in and around the campground, and there are also several Osprey nests. The camp sites are gravel, and somewhat level. However the grass was not cut and the firepits were full. We didn't use the bath house. The camphost is not with in the campground. This campground is a la card. You have your campsite fee , you have a $12 a day fee for electricity and also a $10 fee to use the dump site each time. I belive the dump should be free of charge if you have camping reservations. This campground is through rec.gov however a private company takes care of it. The road leading into the campground is paved but be aware of some very big potholes. Which in my opinion should be fixed. Not a very busy campground.

Nice, basic campground. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. No soap in bathrooms. Well-maintained in the areas natural state. Pretty views. Campground across from lake.

Enjoyed this small campground for a couple of weeks. Visited alot of nearby attractions- rode horses and took several drives in our 4 x 4, which were so beautiful. There is a bit of noise as you're right off the highway, but we had no trouble sleeping at night. Plus, the scenery is really nice. Owner/Manager/ everyone was so nice, and we even had Amazon deliveries. Good experience!

It felt like a ghost town campground. Never saw someone checking on site or cleaning it. Small black bugs hung out in bathroom, had to flush them away before I used the toilet. There was power but no water. The sunset was beautiful. No cell service. Dry tall grass around campground so watch out if you decide on a fire. Too hot for us to have a fire.

Great place to camp! We got our 38.5 ft RV in, no problem. Only a few electric spots but very reasonable price, especially with a senior pass. $23.50 We had a 50 amp site. No water hookups at the camp site, but a spigot is by the restroom. Dump site on location for a $10 fee. Only issue was phone signal, Verizon was hit and miss.
