Banff/Waterfowl Lakes

Overview

Waterfowl Lakes Campground offers a serene escape within the heart of Banff National Park. Situated along the iconic Icefields Parkway, this destination provides a rustic camping experience that emphasizes natural beauty over modern luxuries. It serves as a perfect base for those looking to immerse themselves in the Canadian Rockies without the crowds found near the main townsite. The atmosphere is peaceful, defined by the sounds of the Mistaya River and the sight of towering peaks.

Location & Surroundings

The park is located approximately 57 kilometers north of Lake Louise, making it a prime stop for travelers navigating the Icefields Parkway. It sits between the Upper and Lower Waterfowl Lakes, offering immediate access to turquoise glacial waters. The surroundings are dominated by Mount Chephren and Howse Peak, providing a dramatic backdrop for every campsite. This high-elevation setting ensures cool mountain air and a true wilderness feel, far removed from urban noise and light pollution.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Parks Canada facility, the focus here is on dry camping and preserving the natural environment. There are no power, water, or sewer hookups available at individual sites, making it ideal for self-contained RVs. However, visitors have access to flush toilets, potable water taps, and communal kitchen shelters with wood-burning stoves. There is also a sanitation station located conveniently for waste disposal. Sites are generally spacious and heavily treed, offering a degree of privacy rarely found in private commercial resorts.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of adventure right from their doorstep. Popular hiking trails to Chephren Lake and Cirque Lake begin directly from the campground area, offering stunning views of glaciers and alpine meadows. A short drive south leads to the incredible Mistaya Canyon, where swirling waters have carved deep into the limestone rock. For those looking for photography opportunities, the world-famous vistas of Peyto Lake and Bow Lake are within easy reach of the park entrance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best for self-sufficient RVers who appreciate a quiet, off-grid experience. It is particularly well-suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs, as some turns and site pads can be tight for massive motorhomes. If you value scenic solitude and direct access to backcountry trails over Wi-Fi and cable TV, Waterfowl Lakes will be a highlight of your trip. It is a top choice for nature lovers wanting to witness the raw, unedited beauty of the Alberta wilderness.

Waterfowl Lakes Campground is a peaceful and scenic place to camp along the Icefields Parkway. Surrounded by towering mountains and close to beautiful turquoise lakes, the views here are absolutely stunning. The campground feels quiet and close to nature — perfect for relaxing, cooking outdoors, and enjoying the fresh mountain air. At night, the sky is incredibly clear, making it a great spot for stargazing. If you love simple camping experiences with breathtaking Rocky Mountain scenery, Waterfowl Lakes Campground is a wonderful place to stay.

The campground is huge and beautiful. We got the site #3 which is super close to the lake, we brought the kayak and we spent hours kayaking. We also did the hiking to the lake on top, I truly recommend. The only suggestion to improve is the wood, there was almost nothing on the two days we spent there.

Probably one of the most beautiful campgrounds in the Banff area from a natural and wilderness perspective. Services are very limited – no showers, only basic toilets – but there are plenty of spots to get drinking water. We arrived with our camper at around 10:30 am (August 21) and were worried we wouldn’t find a spot, but there were plenty of sites available and we managed to choose site #11 right by the lake. The campsite was well laid out, spacious, and offered good privacy. The view of the lake is absolutely breathtaking, and you can even take your canoe out on the water. Be prepared for cold nights and early mornings (around 5°C), and note that the campground stays shaded most of the time as it’s surrounded by trees. A truly stunning and peaceful place to camp.

I couldn’t easily find an online map of this campground so wanted to post a picture here from the main sign board at the entrance. What a hidden jewel of Banff National Park! Well worth the drive north for this FCFS spot. Arrived around 11am when people were packing up and had no problem getting a spot. Bathrooms were spotless, water at various spots all over the campground, and two sani dump stations are free. Highly recommend! I’ll definitely be back.

So much to say about this first come, first serve campground. Great location with lots of awesome day hikes around it. My husband and I were able to snag campsite six, which backs up to the lake. We could stay here for several days, just have to clean up in the lake, which is cold, but there are worse things. There is a little road noise on one side of the campground, but otherwise no complaints.
