Barkerville Campgrounds (Lowhee/Forest Rose)

Overview

Barkerville Campgrounds, specifically the Lowhee and Forest Rose sites, offer a unique opportunity to stay at the heart of British Columbia's gold rush history. These campgrounds serve as the primary accommodation for visitors to the Barkerville Historic Town, providing a rustic woodland atmosphere that reflects the rugged spirit of the Cariboo region. While the facilities emphasize a connection to nature, they offer varying levels of service to accommodate both traditional tenters and modern RV travelers looking for a scenic mountain base.

Location & Surroundings

Located at the end of Highway 26, these campgrounds are nestled within the Cariboo Mountains just minutes from the historic townsite entrance. The surroundings are characterized by high-elevation sub-alpine forests, pristine mountain air, and the historical echoes of the gold-bearing Williams Creek. The location is relatively remote, situated deep in the BC interior, which ensures a quiet and secluded experience where the sounds of nature and the local wildlife take center stage against a backdrop of evergreen peaks.

Amenities & Park Features

The amenities differ between the two main loops to cater to diverse needs. Forest Rose Campground is the preferred choice for RVers requiring power, as it offers 15 and 30-amp electrical hookups and features specialized horse corrals for equestrian travelers. Lowhee Campground provides a more traditional experience with spacious dry-camping sites. Both areas include access to well-maintained shower facilities, pit toilets, and picnic tables. While there are no individual sewer or water hookups at the sites, communal water taps and a sani-dump station are available for guest use.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The crown jewel of the area is Barkerville Historic Town, a world-class heritage site featuring over 100 preserved buildings, gold panning, and live street theatre. Beyond the history, the region is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. You can explore the Lowhee Trench hiking trails, visit the nearby arts community of Wells, or spend an afternoon at Jack of Clubs Lake. The proximity to the trailheads of the Cariboo Mountains makes it easy to transition from 19th-century history to modern mountain biking and backcountry exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for history enthusiasts and families who want to be steps away from the daily events and attractions of the historic town. It appeals specifically to RVers who prefer a natural, forested setting over a paved resort-style park. Because the facilities are more traditional, it is best suited for those who enjoy dry camping or only require basic electrical service while spending their days immersed in the heritage and wilderness of the Cariboo Gold Fields.

Super close to Barkerville, nice price. The road was smooth and not dusty. The sites were a good size. We rented one of the cabins. The cabin was advertised as containing a queen bed, but we were pleasantly surprised to also find a bunk bed with a double mattress bottom! There was also a mini fridge, a table and 4 chairs, and it had heat!!!! You do need to provide your own bedding, but the mattresses were all covered in protectors. Lowhee and really nice flush toilets and the BEST camping shower EVER as well as 2 playgrounds and a wash up food prep area. There is even a small area, marked "Service area" where you can get a couple bars of cell phone service hahahaha

The best place I've visited for camping this year. Went into the town of barkerville everyday the week I was there. Prices are very reasonable, the people are great!!

Spacious sites with good amount of space between each so don't feel crammed in. The bathrooms could definitely use a bit more attention but better than just having outhouses. The showers cost $1/4minutes and temperature can't be controlled. Ours were cool to lukewarm at best.

What a cute campground, the sites are private enough that for the most part u can only hear your neighbors. 10 bucks for a tote of wood and a buck for 4 mins in the shower (u can add more). There is outhouses and indoor bathrooms so that was a nice bonus. Other then a little booking mess up, and really bad black flies we had a great experience there. We will go back again.
