Barkley Lake - COE/Canal Campground
Overview
Canal Campground offers a serene lakeside escape managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Located on the northern end of Lake Barkley, this facility provides travelers with immediate access to some of the finest fishing and boating waters in Kentucky. The park is well-regarded for its spacious campsites and the unique vantage point it offers of the canal traffic moving between the region's two major reservoirs, creating a peaceful yet engaging atmosphere for guests.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled in the charming town of Grand Rivers, KY, often called the Village Between the Lakes. It sits directly on the canal connecting Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, providing a narrow strip of land essentially surrounded by water. The landscape is characterized by towering hardwoods and gentle slopes, offering both ample shade and impressive views of the passing barges and pleasure boats that navigate the busy waterway throughout the day.
Amenities & Park Features
Visitors will find a mix of electric hookup sites and non-electric options, many featuring level paved pads and sturdy fire rings. The campground provides essential comforts including modern bathhouses with hot showers, a dump station, a playground for children, and a dedicated boat ramp for those eager to get on the water. While it leans toward a rustic experience compared to private resorts, the well-maintained facilities and proximity to the canal ensure a comfortable and reliable stay for RVers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Just a short drive away, the town of Grand Rivers offers unique boutique shopping and the famous dining experience at Patti’s 1880’s Settlement. Nature enthusiasts can explore the vast Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area, which features over 170,000 acres of hiking trails, the Elk & Bison Prairie, and diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. For water lovers, the canal itself is a prime spot for bank fishing or simply relaxing with a book by the shore.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for anglers and boaters who want to maximize their time on the water without sacrificing the peace of a government-managed park. It is also a perfect fit for families looking for a quiet, nature-focused retreat that remains close to local dining and entertainment. If you enjoy watching marine traffic and value the natural spacing typical of COE parks, this campground provides an excellent home base for exploring the broader Kentucky Lakes region.

Really enjoy this Core of Engineers campground. Need to make reservations through Recreation.gov. We stay at this campground at least once a year. Through the years we have stayed in different loops. Decided we like the view loop because we don't have to unhook our boat that we tow. The overflow parking for boats is not easy to get to, their boat launch is very steep. The sites are paved but you need levelers. Electric & water hook-ups.

Campground is very nice. Shower and bathrooms are clean. Camphosts are very helpful and friendly. Very scenic and beautiful.

Very good campground. If there is a fault, it was the cleanliness of the bathhouse. But, there was a hatch going on and bugs were everywhere.

A perfect place to chill. all campers are friendly. I've never had a problem there in all the years I've camped there. I love the nature there most of all. woodpeckers, deer, frogs, squirrels, I just love it here.
